For as long as Charlie Bartlett can remember, there's been music. His mom always used to play and, when he was four, he'd had his first piano lesson, learning to play chopsticks with his feet swinging. After his dad went to prison, his mom had played less and less and the piano had become Charlie's. His mom used to leave him notes there because she knew that, sooner or later, he'd end up sitting there. Music was always comforting. Music was always there. It didn't change when he wasn't looking, didn't shift or confuse or get itself put in prison.

It never went away.

During his time on the island, Charlie's spent a lot of time at the piano in the rec-room. It's a nice one, solid, a good tone, but it's nothing compared to the piano that he grew up playing. It's a different sound. It's never felt safe.

With his headphones in, Charlie's wandering along the boardwalk when he sees it. He's learned to trust his eyes, so he doesn't doubt that it's there but he does stop for a moment. Because, for a moment, he can't breathe. It's not just that it's his piano. It's that it was his Mom's piano first.

He sits down on the stool and lifts the lid and he plays a single note. His heart contracts and a tear slips down his cheek unnoticed as he plays a ruffle of notes and slips into the only song that's in his head.

"And we knew who were then...girls were girls and men were men...Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again..."
And he's crying, he's really crying, so his voice wavers but he rememebers every single note.

It's only then that it occurs to him to take off his headphones.

ooc: item post! Charlie's Steinway piano from home has appeared on the boardwalk close to Summerfell. For the song that Charlie's singing (and the way that Anton sounds when he sings), there's a clip! ST/LT most welcome. Excellent time to meet him.
