It's only a few weeks into the school term and, if Olive were sensible, she'd be studying. Today's a light day, meaning she has plenty of time to do so, if she just buckles down, and it's not like she isn't a focused, disciplined student when she wants to be. Even without these grades contributing to the college applications she won't be writing ( Read more... )

"What can?" Miranda asks utterly comfortable in asking that which might satisfy her curiosity of Olive. There are few people that she trusts so implicitly to tell her the truth and not judge her for it.

Sliding up to Olive, she peers at the cover of the magazine. The combination of words on the front cover suggests that this is certainly not the sort of magazine that she has ever read. "Oh dear."

"That about sums it up," Olive says, nodding. "Oh, dear." Things like this are a commonplace sight both back home and on the bookshelf, but Miranda's never had to pass by them again and again in the supermarket. Still, sex is just a fact of life, no matter how much Cosmo seems to think she needs to have obtained an A in gymnastics to attempt it. "And various sexual... tricks... advocated by this publication, that's what. They seem to think there are things that are, like, sexy or fun or something, when they really look, um... painful, actually. I'm really sure you're not actually supposed to do that to a guy."

Her eyes are wide as she takes this in. Sex does seem to have a rather commonplace way about it in this modern world. People seem discontent to keep it solely behind closed doors. While she can appreciate that there is some good that can come from knowing about it, she cannot think that such a preoccupation can be good for getting things done.

"Oh goodness." Miranda tilts her head to peer at the pages Olive is looking at, letting out a tiny gasp in surprise. "That would not be enjoyable, at least not that I should think it should be. Oh goodness."

"Well, it's not all like this," Olive says hurriedly. Though she's unashamed of her sex life - it's a perfectly normal, healthy, enjoyable part of life, after all - she rarely opts to talk about it. Even if things hadn't gone the way they did back home, she wouldn't really be inclined to share. For all her openness, some things she prefers to keep private.

That said, with this here for Miranda to peruse and her being - oddly enough to her way of thinking, since it was never true before - the more experienced one here, it seems important to be clear. She doesn't know if Miranda's ever had sex before, although she knows her options were seriously limited before the island, but she does know she doesn't want her thinking Cosmo's the end all be all of modern sex. "I mean, this is just a crazy magazine pandering to women with low self-esteem who think turning themselves into trick ponies will help them keep their boyfriends. Not that there aren't, you know, a wide variety of things you can do, just... as awkward as it can be, it's also ( ... )

"I should hope not." There is a firm quality to her voice, an authority that has no right to be there. She knows how a man and woman ought to couple, knows that even there are those who wish to couple with the same sex, but she is certain it should look very little like this.

Her eyebrows lift and a smile blooms at Olive's description. It makes Miranda laugh, the notion of women acting like horses even though that is quite plainly not what her friend means. "Of course. I think I did read a tome on the matter, but this magazine does not seem like the sort of thing that nearly anyone should be reading, even if it does exist. Such a strange thing, indeed. Coupling as such is meant to be cherished and only rarely performed in front of others."

Olive almost chokes on her laughter, swaying over to lean her head on Miranda's shoulder. "Yes," she says, "very rarely. I'm opting for never, personally, but, you know, to each their own." The idea of it is mildly horrifying, but in that counterintuitive yet utterly ordinary way of such things, she finds it weirdly endearing to hear Miranda talk like that. If they're not on the same page, they're very near it.

She agrees, for one, on the matter of it being cherished. She always meant to be particular about who she slept with; she thinks now she should have applied the same discretion to lying about it, but then, it wasn't like Rhi had a whole slew of friends to run off and tell either. Anyway, these days, things are so different, she never would have imagined half of this before she showed up here. "What book did you read?"

A grin splits across her face, her shoulders shaking with laughter as Olive leans against her shoulder. "I should never say never. One never knows what sorts of things do lie ahead," she warns her voice shaking with laughter.

It's good to know that even though she feels strange and backwards in these times that Olive is willing to come along and let her follow after. Still smiling as she adopts a rather academic tone, one that is better suited for recitations of bland facts than what she really is speaking of. "Twas this book entitled I Modi. It was quite descriptive in an oddly classical manner."

"I'm... not familiar with it," Olive says, brow furrowing slightly, and wondering if the curiosity that prompts is something she's going to regret. And all things considered, Miranda's probably right about never saying never, if only because there are plenty of things she's said and done she would have sworn she never would. That particular thing, though, she highly doubts is in the cards, even if Eduardo does seem to find more public settings something of a turn-on. "Sounds odd. But potentially entertaining."

"It was most definitely both of those things. It was not nearly as overtly horrifying as some of the true classics, but nonetheless highly informative."

Which is exactly how Miranda prefers to gain her knowledge. There had been pictures, whose presence had been largely unnecessary. Thus far she has determined that is largely inapplicable to her life or really the lives of anyone. "I would not suggest going looking for it."

"Yeah, that's... that's the fastest possible way to get me looking," Olive says. She already has a strong feeling this is going to be to her detriment, but it won't be the first time or the last she sought out something she shouldn't have because someone said not to. With a description like that, it's impossible not to be a little curious, even if, current reading material aside, she doesn't feel the need for literary instruction. If nothing else, she's always been more a fan of practical application and hands-on learning. "Although me looking is probably the fastest way to get the bookshelf not to give it to me, so that may actually work out."
