(no subject)
I mentioned it over dinner two nights ago, and it was downhill from there.
That goddamn butterfly garden, not far from the big waterfall and probably poorly maintained by now, but I mentioned it to them, in passing, while Flo drew butterflies on the margins of a coloring book at the table, and they haven't shut up about it, since. Yesterday, I took a trip out there, to make sure it was still there, still safe for 'em, and then at the crack of fuckin' dawn, this morning, Mack jumped on my fuckin' head to wake me up. It's time to go. It's time to goooooo!
Now, just making the trek up to the Compound with two crazy little four-year-olds is an ordeal that takes more planning than I ever could've imagined, but a day trip like this? I've gotta pack lunches and snacks and juice and water and swim suits (because the falls are so close) and sunscreen and goddamn coloring books and spare clothes and two little handmade butterfly nets I found out in the Children's Office yesterday. Then we have to have a long discussion about why we can't lug their dolls out there, too, and -- What about the bucket of Legos, Neil? Come on, pleeeeease!!??
It's still early when we make it outside the hut, a heavy pack on my back, the two of them wearing sparkly fairy wings with their t-shirts and blue jeans and tennis shoes that light up with each step. They're loud and overly excited, even though I haven't given 'em any sugar today, and I'm tired already, in anticipation of what's to come, but in spite of that, they are just... really fuckin' cute right now.
"Come on, Neil!" Mack says, half childish squeal and half exasperated sigh -- God, why are you so slow? -- that makes her sound way older than four.
"I'm comin'!" I laugh, making sure the door's shut behind me before I follow along close behind, Max and Dexter and Gordon at our heels.
