Luna is still not entirely certain she should be teaching anyone, but here it is.
"Why, I do think you'll be a good assistant," she tells Mittens. "Hoof, please." She takes the soft cloth and begins to clean the sand and dirt away. The teaching part has already begun, but she likes to think that she's learned something from Hagrid--
--and that is that perhaps day one is not the best day for creature or students to meet.
So far, any student in Care of Magical Creatures had been treated to books, clippings from the wonderful Muggle equivalents of the Quibbler she finds on the bookshelf, and her own lectures, which admittedly wander from one subject to another.
She's quite used to feeling even-keeled and balanced. Luna Lovegood does not worry herself very much at all.
However, she hasn't often stood up and announced to the world at large that she does know what she's doing. Reminding Hermione that she's being surprisingly closed-minded about the Rotfang Conspiracy is one thing. Offering to teach is another.
Luckily for her, Mittens is a very calming influence.
She sits on the front step of the Compound, a thestral hoof in her lap as she cleans and hums some unknown tune.
