I am 49, going on 50....

It was not a surprise party. Today was Anthony’s birthday and it would hardly come as a surprise that Guy would hold a party for him on the day. It was a tradition, an unspoken agreement. Cambridge, London or Tabula Rasa; Guy would host a party for Anthony every year, just as Anthony had always done for Guy.

Nor should it be a surprise to the birthday boy that the party was held at the gallery, since he had been told to leave his beloved gallery that afternoon with the message ‘and don’t come back until tonight’.

Finally, it should come as no surprise that a new painting had been added to the gallery, a large canvas sporting an enormous ‘49’ and in slightly smaller letters ‘and counting’. Because well… no party was complete without Guy taking the piss at his best friend’s sad age.

There were drinks, there were snacks and bites, and there was music, balloons and decoration. There was a party and though there was no hope of any MP dancing on the table with a boy half his age, things were as good as it got.

((A party for Anthony Blunt, hosted, as usual, by Guy. Everyone he might have met (and he might have met everyone), is invited. Tag one, tag all, gathering style all Ts welcome)).
