Now, McCoy's not an engineer. He spent a lot of years going to medical school to heal people and make a difference in the world, but it doesn't take a damn engineer to realize that the fritzing lines on his datapadd mean nothing good. His communicator went bust a long time ago, his tricorder has been working, and up until now, his datapadd had been ( Read more... )

"It's this piece of crap," he says with a sigh, giving it a small flick at the screen before holding it up to the light to see if that's made a difference. If anything, it looks like he's gone and made it worse. His patience is already beginning to falter and this isn't helping any. "You know computers at all?"

"Where I come from, there's a whole damn department of engineers who would look at this and know what to do in about three seconds," he says and feels a strange pang of homesickness for the Enterprise, of all places. It looks almost like he's started to miss the damn boat. "You don't even want to take a look, for curiosity's sake?"

"How about you juggle skillsets," he jokes, fully aware of how bad a pun it is, but hapless to stop it. He cocks a brow upwards and holds it out to her in a gesture that says 'take it' more than anything else. "I mean, you can't make it worse. Trust me, I've already done that."

"I think so?" McCoy says in reply, giving the damn thing a hopeless look. "I have all the research in paper format, but there are hundreds of pages and when I want to find something quickly, it's nice to tap it in and find it with a quick reference," he says with a growl. "And now, the goddamn technology's gone and failed me." Just like everything in his life inevitably does.

"The sad thing is? I think other than Helen, I'm about as far as the future goes," he says, but then he remembers that goddamn time-traveler (or the one who claims to be, anyway). "Maybe I ought to just put it in a drawer and forget about it," he sighs. "What've you been doing lately, hm? Feels like I haven't been paying attention and that's my fault."

"The one who runs the club," McCoy clarifies. He's met the other one, but their full experience has been polite nods in the lab and that time when he took her to task while she was giving a speech. It's not one of his proudest moments, but he'll live with it and he's glad he didn't just shut his mouth. "She's from the future, but still a little bit behind me. I think," he says. "It's not like we sit and compare notes."

"If you can find it, let me know. I know how to import and export data and edit it," he admits, because after he'd started to use one, he hadn't looked into the fine details of it, so much. "I'd hate to go back to paper, I swear to god, I would."

"I've got it somewhere else. It'd be a pain in my ass to have to log all this stuff back in, but at least it'd be working," he says, trying to shove down the feeling that he really wouldn't be any kind of pleased if he lost the information. "You wanna try? Go on, give it a go."
