[Speed Dating, Round One]

Sep 23, 2011 19:07

This wasn't the first time Karen had run speed dating, and she had everything down to practically a science by now. She was going to miss watching what sorts of trouble Tony could get himself in, but there were a decent amount of people signed up, enough so that she had to split them down the middle so nobody would be overwhelmed ( Read more... )

It was funny, being in a group with two men she'd already slept with, but Lily couldn't find a single thing wrong with it either. If nothing else came of this, at least she knew she already enjoyed the company of two of the men in her group and that had to bode well for the rest of the night. Dressed in dark shorts and a tank top -- even here, she couldn't seem to break the habit of dressing in dark colours -- she'd pulled her hair back and was toying with a long necklace she'd found in the box months ago.

Relaxing into her chair, a drink on the table, she smiled as someone approached and let the necklace drop. "Hey," she said, nodding at the chair across from her in invitation, even though she knew they were supposed to sit down anyway.

"Hey," Silas grinned, taking the seat opposite her. It wasn't often that he looked on past relationships with anything but intense regret, but tonight, he had to feel at least a little grateful for Lisa. Not that he expected anyone here tonight to be married, or divorced and still in love with her ex-husband, but as far as bridging the age gap went, he felt far less uncomfortable than he might have expected. The woman sitting across from him wasn't too much older, as far as he could tell, but the way that she carried herself and the amount of confidence she exuded, she seems younger and carefree in one moment, and wise beyond her years - in a way not entirely academic - in the next. "I'm Silas," he offered. "How's it going?"

"Lily," she answered, resting one hand on the table, circling the bottom of her glass as she leaned forward to look at Silas. Cute, definitely, but awfully young, she thought, though that might not matter all that much. If he was here, he was likely older than eighteen, which would make her sound a little ridiculous if she said it out loud, but that was good enough for her.

"Good," she said, grinning. "So far, anyway. It's hard to have a bad night when you have the chance to meet so many new people. So where are you from, Silas? Before the island."

"I know just what you mean," laughed Silas. "That's why I came here tonight, too, to meet people. I just got here a few weeks ago, so..." He trailed off, letting out another short laugh as he shrugged his shoulders. Then, he considered the question, and briefly, considered telling her that he was from Seattle, or Michigan, or even Iceland, as his fake passport claimed. But he wasn't Mike Newman anymore - here, he didn't have to be. "California," he said, finally. "But we - I, I was traveling for a bit before I got here. It was kind of a cross country thing, almost all the way to the east coast. What about you?"

"California," Lily answered with a genuine smile, pleased to meet someone else who might have spent time in San Francisco. "Originally, anyway, but I'd just recently moved to New York before I ended up here. Sounds like we were taking similar paths."

She didn't believe in karma or destiny, but it was still a nice similarity, causing her to relax further.

"Yeah?" said Silas, raising a brow. Unless she had moved from west coast to east with her own merry band of criminal and potentially psychotic family members, he doubted their paths were all that similar, but agreeing with a date never hurt anyone. Besides, she might not be a drug dealer, but she looked like she had not a few stories of her own. "Why'd you move to New York? Couldn't stand the heat or something?"

"No, I loved California," Lily answered as she leaned forward again, elbows resting on the table, her hands encircling the bottom of her glass. "I moved for a job. I was part of a dance company in New York." And she missed San Francisco sometimes, but New York had been exciting, too, a new experience, a fresh start.

"What about you?" she asked. "Why were you moving?"

First impressions are different when all you have to rely on are your ears. She's only said the one word, but I can already tell this woman, whoever she is, has a great voice. That I'm sure we've never met brings a genuine smile to my face as I sit down, tucking my cane underneath the table, and laying it across my lap.

"Hey, yourself," I say, and extend my hand. I can only guess how accurate my reach is, but ego would have me place it as very. "Matt Murdock."

"Lily," she answered, reaching across the table to take the offered hand, her smile evident in her voice. The best part of doing this on the island was the guarantee that she wasn't going to meet anyone uninteresting or unattractive, and even if she didn't end up with a new date from every man, she was at least going to find someone she'd probably want to talk to again.

"Having fun so far?" she asked, because she certainly was. It was Eden she was less sure of, but they were in different groups and she'd have to hope the other woman didn't need rescuing any time soon, as she'd promised she would do.

"It'd be hard not to with such charming company," I reply, the line falling easily from my lips. It's strange, the things you don't lose even when you're out of practice. Whether my ability to sell the flirtation has gone to seed is a matter of personal taste, I'd argue, but if nothing else, it's genuine.

"What about you? Is the evening exceeding expectations?"

"Handsome men feeding me timeless lines that are only timeless because they work?" Lily asked, laughing. "It's hard to have a bad night in a situation like this." She was sure people could manage it, some of the women certainly looked nervous, but she wasn't going to let that affect her fun.

"So what sort of job did you do back home?" she asked, figuring she might as well dive in. Lily knew people weren't their jobs, but sometimes you could tell a lot about a person by what they did.

"I was a defense attorney, working out of Hell's Kitchen in New York. My best friend and I owned a private firm," I say, and maybe the part about the firm is pushing it, but it's an accomplishment I'm proud of. We've had to rebuild our lives so often, because of Daredevil and his enemies, that I just can't help it.

I smile a little, at the thought of Foggy, and add, "He used to say he was the perspiration and I was the inspiration. I think he was selling himself short, though. He was a brilliant litigator. What about yourself?"

It seemed like there were many lawyers on the island and Lily smiled a little, knowing how much Jeff missed what he did, even if he didn't say it. Being here, not being able to practice, she knew it couldn't be easy on anyone who loved what they did.

"I danced with a ballet company in New York," she answered, and although she missed the audience and the rehearsals, being surrounded by other dancers, she still danced every day. It wasn't the same, but she hadn't lost it either. "We were in the middle of Swan Lake when I arrived here."

"A dancer?" I say, interest reading clear in my voice. While I can't appreciate a dance the same way as a sighted man, there's more beauty to a performance than just what's visible on the stage. My thoughts turn, immediately, to Maya and her work, but I steer them back towards the woman in front of me.

"You must be very talented."

"I made a living," Lily answered, smiling, which she figured was answer enough. Her talent wasn't something she ever denied, finding there to be no use or sense in something like that. It wasn't arrogant to know one was good at their job and dancing had served a career in New York and California both, making her enough money to live comfortably.

"Did you enjoy practicing law?" she asked, then laughed. "You must have, to have a private firm."

"Hell, I like it enough to even moonlight as a teacher, here," I confess, leaning forward a little as though divulging a secret. Teaching isn't a natural fit; at the end of the day, I like to take care of business myself rather than shuck the responsibility onto someone else. But with no law to practice on Tabula Rasa, I have to make do where I can.

"Have you kept up your ballet?"
