Dodge was in a reading class and he was working his ass off. It was kind of bullshit because he couldn't smoke or anything, but he had a stack of books that were at his level or whatever. Some of them were kind of cool There were ones where you got to a certain point and you had to pick a thing to happen, then you flipped around in the book. It wasn't like reading shit start to finish. And the bookshelf had given him some copies of comic books and they weren't so bad. Archie and Jughead and Betty and Veronica. Cool enough.
But he'd been fucking around one day and had overheard some class and it was fuckin' cool. They were putting heads on sticks and shit that they were reading about. Dodge decided then and there that he wanted to read that book. So rather than ask and look like a dumb shit or get told he was too far below the reading level for the class, Dodge just strolled into the room when no one was there and took one of the copies of the books that was stacked there.
"Lord of the f...fl...eye...flies," he said to himself as he read the cover. He sat with his stolen book in the kitchen, half a sandwich and a cup of coffee beside him along with a piece of paper and a pencil to write down words he didn't know so he could look them up later. But this book was his bitch right now. He was already on page three and that was pretty fuckin' good.
Asthma was a word he added to his list, then read aloud.
"Ass mar. Ass mar? What the fuck...oh, right. Asthma. I get it," he said. "Poor fuckin' Ralph," Dodge added with a snort.
He wondered what Miss Shirley would think of him reading this. He kind of wondered if that guy teaching the class would notice one of his books was missing. He kind of wondered what Fagin would think of him wasting his time reading a goddamned book.
Then he took a bite of his sandwich and chewed slowly as he picked his way along, jotting down more words like spectacles and foliage. Who the fuck was supposed to know what this shit even meant?
