It wasn’t like she was avoiding the waterfall, it was right next to her hut for crying out loud. It just... made more sense, that after her run, she’d take a swim in the ocean. And today, when it felt like she’d run around the island twice, she really needed to not be any place that had any kind of emotional awkwardness attached to it. So she found the most isolated spot on the beach she could and dove into the waves, meaning to swim herself into exhaustion.
Powers. The island was buzzing about it, had been all day, that people had woken up with powers. Except her. She’d done everything she could think of to trigger them short of shooting herself in the foot and about now even that had its own growing appeal. Swimming out and away from the shore, Rachel could feel her arms and legs already straining, but she still pulled and forced herself through the saltwater. And then the cramp hit, her leg seizing up and body straining. She tried not to panic as she dipped below the waves and that’s when it happened.
She heard laughter.
Forcing her head above water, trying to make her leg obey, she looked around, trying to find the source of the laughter but she couldn’t see anyone. All she saw was the fin of a dolphin playing nearby. “Hello?” She called out, coughing a little as she swallowed some of the water. “Is anyone there?”
No one but us animals, sweetheart. How’s the leg? Rachel looked around again and found herself face-to-face with the dolphin. I said, how’s the leg? She thought she was going crazy. Was the dolphin actually talking to her? “Um, a little sore?”
Yeah, I noticed, need a lift back to shore? Rachel blinked, treading water as she tried to process the fact that she was having a conversation with a dolphin. Meanwhile, she nodded and the dolphin swam up next to her so she could throw her arms around it. Which was when it promptly dove, a move so sudden she gasped, expecting to choke as they headed down. Only she didn’t. The water filled her lungs and... she didn’t die. In fact, she felt great and she barely noticed when they slowed, close enough to land that she could take over.
Still underwater, she turned to face the swimming dolphin, listening to it chuckle and mutter something about stupid humans and not knowing how to really swim. Trying to sound grateful, she offered the dolphin thanks as she broke the surface, getting far enough onto the shore to not be pulled back into the waves. Lying on her back she looked up at the sun and began to laugh.
That’s right, dudette, you enjoy this righteous day. Rock on. Rachel looked over to see the sea turtle slipping back into the waves and she almost doubled over she was laughing so hard. Perfect, just perfect. She was freaking Namor. What the hell was she going to do with that?
[ooc: Dated to late Friday afternoon, feel free to catch her chuckling as she tries to sort all this out.]
