If Logan was honest, which sometimes he was, he'd admit that he'd been a little off lately. Changes in his life had never gone over well, and loss- Well, anyone who'd seen him after his mother's death could have told you just how unstable loss made him ( Read more... )

Anne knew this was the most likely place, outside of his home, to find him, and she didn't feel right about invading his home, his sanctuary. Here on the sand she felt as though it was more welcome, or at least more expected.

She led Matthew by the hand and parked him right in front of Logan so that he couldn't miss him.

"Please," she said, "watch him for just a few minutes? I just need a few minutes."

If it had been anyone else, he would have said no. He would have found the cruelest words and lashed out viciously, because he wasn't in the mood to look after anyone else. He just wasn't.

But it was Anne- and Anne and Matthew were family. He just didn't have it in him to be cruel to them.

Silently, he nodded, offering Matthew his hand so he'd come closer and sit with him.

Matthew looked back at his mum just one time, but when she encouraged him forward he plunked down on the sand next to Logan and let go of her hand. Not necessarily in that order.

"I'll be back for you," said Anne, and kissed him on the head and rushed off before she made a spectacle of herself.

Matthew banged his heels against the sand a few times till his feet were half buried, then looked up at Logan with big eyes.

Logan rubbed his face and then looked over at Matthew.

"Mom's having a hard time, huh kid? How about you? You doing alright?" he asked, brushing a little sand from the boy's cheek.

Matthew kicked the sand a little bit more, then tried to crawl up onto Logan's lap, like he would have when he was littler. If he was on Logan, then Logan couldn't disappear. Though now his mum was out of sight, and he twisted this way and than till he saw her hair at the treeline and knew she was still there.

Logan shifted slightly so Matthew could sit on his knee, rubbing the boy's back.

He didn't know what to say or do, and he wasn't really one for dishing out comfort, but he knew he needed to say something.

"Do you want to walk down to the water with me?" he asked. "We'll stand right on the edge of the waves and let them bury our feet in the sand."

Matthew looked for his mother again, just to make sure, then back at Logan.

"Jus' our feet," he said, because that was very important. "Not our heads."

"Not our heads," Logan promised, lifting Matthew to his feet and then getting up himself.

"Come on," he said, offering the young boy his hand and a sad smile.

"We gotta stay close to mum," he said, in case Logan had any other ideas. He was never ever not going to stay close to mum again. Not ever ever. "If we stay inna sand, we stay forever."

"Yeah?" Logan asked, wishing it really was as simple as that.

"Yeah, maybe we do," he agreed quietly, trying not to let the sudden pain in his chest show.
