She led Matthew by the hand and parked him right in front of Logan so that he couldn't miss him.
"Please," she said, "watch him for just a few minutes? I just need a few minutes."

But it was Anne- and Anne and Matthew were family. He just didn't have it in him to be cruel to them.
Silently, he nodded, offering Matthew his hand so he'd come closer and sit with him.

"I'll be back for you," said Anne, and kissed him on the head and rushed off before she made a spectacle of herself.
Matthew banged his heels against the sand a few times till his feet were half buried, then looked up at Logan with big eyes.

"Mom's having a hard time, huh kid? How about you? You doing alright?" he asked, brushing a little sand from the boy's cheek.

He didn't know what to say or do, and he wasn't really one for dishing out comfort, but he knew he needed to say something.
"Do you want to walk down to the water with me?" he asked. "We'll stand right on the edge of the waves and let them bury our feet in the sand."
