If Logan was honest, which sometimes he was, he'd admit that he'd been a little off lately. Changes in his life had never gone over well, and loss- Well, anyone who'd seen him after his mother's death could have told you just how unstable loss made him ( Read more... )

She couldn't surf but she could float in the ocean, and so she did. The water felt good and it was the most interesting thing- when she floated she could feel the baby more when she touched her stomach thanks to not having gravity weighing everything down.

She was walking back to the path to go home when she spied Logan. Oh, how she was jealous of that board and wet suit. It would be months and months still before she could surf again.

As she got closer she noted that he looked upset. Rightfully so, Savannah thought. Rightfully so. She didn't ask or say a word, she simply sat down next to him, close but not touching, and was quiet for a long moment.

"Hi," she finally said, breaking the silence.

Logan had tensed when she'd joined him. For all he liked Savannah, and for all she was carrying his child, sometimes he just wasn't in the mood.

"Hey," he replied flatly, glancing at her and then returning his gaze to the ocean.

His fingers itched to be holding a joint, and he raked them through the sand as if that might curb the desire.

She smiled faintly and remained silent. Savannah was comfortable with silence. For all that she was chatty and all that she talked all day long in the children's office, sometimes she long for, with a most desperate ache, those long silences she would share with John when they enjoyed one another's company without having to say a word.

But the tension was coming off Logan in waves and it felt like the uncomfortable silence that had grown between she and John the second time he'd come back, when she'd been so guarded and passive aggressive. It was a silence that made her raw and wary and it wasn't long before she had to speak.

"Do you need to talk?" she asked, but there was something flat and lacking in her voice. Not the usual joy. His tension put her on edge and although she wanted to be a friend and was more than willing to listen, Savannah braced to guard herself if need be.

Logan said nothing, his silence answering that question.

And it was bullshit, because he did need to talk- he just didn't want to. He was sick of talking, sick of hearing how things would be better and all that shit people seemed to spout. He was angry and uncomfortable in his own skin, and what he wanted was a fight, not a pep talk.

And Savannah was so sweet, and so kind- and at the moment Logan couldn't help but hate her a little for being so damn nice.

He'd told her in the past that he had his bad days. He only hoped she'd understand that this was exactly what he'd meant.

Anne knew this was the most likely place, outside of his home, to find him, and she didn't feel right about invading his home, his sanctuary. Here on the sand she felt as though it was more welcome, or at least more expected.

She led Matthew by the hand and parked him right in front of Logan so that he couldn't miss him.

"Please," she said, "watch him for just a few minutes? I just need a few minutes."

If it had been anyone else, he would have said no. He would have found the cruelest words and lashed out viciously, because he wasn't in the mood to look after anyone else. He just wasn't.

But it was Anne- and Anne and Matthew were family. He just didn't have it in him to be cruel to them.

Silently, he nodded, offering Matthew his hand so he'd come closer and sit with him.

Matthew looked back at his mum just one time, but when she encouraged him forward he plunked down on the sand next to Logan and let go of her hand. Not necessarily in that order.

"I'll be back for you," said Anne, and kissed him on the head and rushed off before she made a spectacle of herself.

Matthew banged his heels against the sand a few times till his feet were half buried, then looked up at Logan with big eyes.

Logan rubbed his face and then looked over at Matthew.

"Mom's having a hard time, huh kid? How about you? You doing alright?" he asked, brushing a little sand from the boy's cheek.
