If nothing else, Auggie has always been a man who can adapt to things.
And that's what he's doing really, every single day - adapting. Learning. It's a (frustratingly, at points) process, but he's well aware it's either this or depending on others for the rest of his time here, which just isn't an option. He didn't expect that when he was first blinded, and he's not going to here.
It helps things honestly have been getting easier. It doesn't hurt that most of the island's 'attractions' are along the boardwalk, which he usually sticks to any time he leaves the Compound on his own. It's just easier, and while maybe one day he'll stray a little into the less civilized areas, he's not going to do that until he's got the normal spots down. Considering how far he's come, maybe that goal isn't so far off.
There's things he'll always need help with, though, and he can accept that. The box of clothes is probably on the top of that list, given it's ability to....do whatever it does. Make horrible clothes appear, he guesses? At this point he's found it actually gives him clothes that feel fine but are neon-colored, something he wouldn't be able to know without a set of eyes.
It's his least favorite feature so far, to put it lightly.
It's also why he finds himself having to do laundry so often, because there's only so many clothes he owns after the very few weeks he's been trying (with the help of others) to coax things from it. He's doing that now, in fact - leaning against one of the washing machines as another whirls around what he'd just put into it. It's not like he has anything better to do while it's going, so he waits, letting the vibration of the machine working lull him into a kind of half-daydreaming state. It's probably the only reason why he doesn't hear the footsteps near him until they're practically next to him.
"Sorry," he says in the person's general direction once he realizes someone is there, a sheepish half-smile lifting on his face. "Do you need me to move?"
