Dated July 3rd, 2011:
"This is going to hurt like a sonofabitch, but then it'll be over and we'll pump some of the good stuff into you so you won't feel a thing. You with us, Private?"

"Tunny," he says, through teeth that are still gritted and maybe it would make more sense to introduce himself as Joe or Joseph, but that name has never erally felt like anyone he recognises. Tunny made more sense, even after his dad died and he stopped swimming all the time.

He swallows, trying to psych himself up, eyes squeezed tight closed and then he nods.

"All the way," he says.

Beaten and broken, Tunny Clarke arrives on the island. Luckily, he's in safe hands.

"I had to amputate but it appears to be a clean wound. I can't imagine you'll have trouble with it. When you've healed some, I will see what I can do to make you a prosthetic."

Amputate. She says it like it's nothing, like it's easy, but it's a part of him gone missing and it feels like, if he just tried hard enough, he could still press his heel into the bed.

"Oh, Jesus," he mumbles, and a tear rolls down the side of his nose.

Tunny comes around from his surgery and Helen breaks the news about the full extent of the damage that one bullet can cause.
