There is nothing so disorienting as waking up and having no clue where he is. Mace doesn't panic, however -- he almost can't find the energy to do much more than stare up at an unfamiliar concrete ceiling, waiting impatiently for his memories to trickle back. When that doesn't prove to give him results in the few seconds he's been awake, he shifts, trying to get a proper look around the room. That proves to be a bad idea when pain radiates up from his leg, which is surprising enough that Mace lets out a short cry, and he leans up on an elbow to move the blanket off himself to see what kind of damage he's taken.
When his hand comes into view, white bandages stark against the dark blankets, it starts to come back. He remembers his last few minutes with Icarus, the cold he can barely fathom anymore, and just how much it hurt. He remembers somehow showing up in what he'd believed to be the Earth room, but that interface had never been so intricate or personal.
He remembers Shari and Lexie and his own slow thaw.
The room he's in doesn't seem so strange anymore, either; while he may not have been entirely lucid for however long it's been since he showed up, he remembers Lexie checking up on him every now and then, and maybe even Shari once. Between the rest and the pain medication, everything is a blur. The blanket comes off, and Mace isn't surprised to see the splint on his leg, vaguely remembering something about a fracture, remembering the way Icarus sounded when her mainframe came down on him.
Could he have ever truly been as cold as he remembers?
Trying to move off the bed proves to be a bad idea, and Mace's breaths sound harsh to his own ears in the small room. At least the door is open, and while he can't see anyone yet, he hears people. Low voices, things being shuffled around -- he even catches the aroma of something being cooked.
Where the hell is he and what happened to the Icarus II?
"Hello?" His voice is faint, and Mace clears his throat, trying again. "Anyone? Lexie?"
