Skipping his next to last day of classes is pretty pointless as far as rebellion goes, but Jason doesn't care, he'll take it.
He'd left the hut that morning with an extra burst of speed, one hint of a female voice on the other side of Bucky's door enough to tell him that Bucky was too occupied to care what direction he took off in, and so, when the moment came to choose the path towards gymnastics class or elsewhere, Jason had chosen elsewhere.
The Compound, more specifically, where he'd done his best to eat his weight in scrambled eggs, then, instead of moving on towards Bucky's cardio class, headed to the lower levels of the Compound.
It's kind of nice down here. There's a couch that doesn't see as much use, and a projector he can play reels on. For some reason the only movies it will give him are cartoons, but Jason doesn't actually mind this, Billy's surprise that Jason had never seen the Star Wars movies recent enough that he shrugs the stupidity of the first title away. The first reel he watches is a some movie about a lion cub who basically just runs away when his dad gets killed by his evil brother. It pisses Jason off, and he turns it off halfway through, right around the time a rat and a hog creature are singing about not giving a shit, which, whatever. Try that in the real world.
The next movie he loads up is about a deer named Bambi, which isn't as awful as he'd have thought. It's kind of a stupid deer, but Bambi's friends are okay, even if they're even more stupid. Jason folds his long limbs into a ball at the end of the couch, a blanket around his shoulders to guard against the air conditioned chill, and worries at his cast.
He worries about a lot of things, actually. The cast is the most immediate, but only by virtue of being stuck to his hand. It's been six weeks, it's time for the damn thing to come off, and though Jason knows it'd be easier if he just went to the clinic and let them cut it off of him, they could just as easily say it needs to stay on, and fuck that. So he sits, half an eye on the movie and the other on peeling his cast away in little chunks, his thoughts less full of baby deer and more of his roommate, or, should he say, roommates.
He actually hadn't minded so much when Bucky's girlfriend arrived, even if he'd found her wearing little more than Bucky's shirt. Bucky had seemed easier around her, even telling people before he rode off on Virginia when he realized he could only tell the truth. But then he'd come back, looking as stonefaced grim as Jason's ever seen him, and Jason hadn't gotten a word out of him about it. Not about the bruise on his jaw, not about what he'd been doing. Definitely not about the fact that Steve showed up with even more bruises on the very same day.
Jason might not have verbal confirmation, but he knows they fought, and he isn't even judging either of them for it, god knows he and Bruce did plenty of damage to one another once reunited, but...but Bucky and Steve always seemed to be on much better terms than that. Not simple, but not violent, either. It's disturbing, and the harder Jason thinks about it, the bigger the chunks removed from his cast. He'd have the whole thing off in no time, except that something on the projector draws his attention back to the movie.
The mama and the baby deer are running like hell through the forest, and even before the mama disappears from the screen, Jason knows what's about to happen. Still, the sudden crack of gunshot makes him jump, and he watches, stricken, as Bambi creeps out his shelter and begins searching the snow for his mother, calling for her in a little voice that won't be answered, until all at once it is.
Jason glares at the new deer looming over Bambi with its antlers and its deep voice. "What the fuck!" Jason blurts. He's only been half-paying attention, but he's sure that this is the first time the whole movie Bambi's dad has even bothered showing up. "Where the hell were you when she was dying, stupid asshole deer!"
