This had started innocently enough. The Hub was a relatively quiet and well-lit spot for Jane to review her notes while she waited for her laundry to finish drying. The rec room felt too cloistered to her, too closed off and artificial, and she'd nursed a glass and a half of wine at the bar before deciding she was hungry. A check of her watch ( Read more... )

Though he's not been on the island very long, Thor suspects it likely that his voracious appetite has already made an impression on those who work in the kitchen. It had certainly been worthy of comment during his brief stay on Earth, and so newly a mortal (again), he's not yet mastered the art of eating at regular intervals, always waiting too long until his hunger got the best of him, and then he ate the lion's share of whatever food was still around. He's not expecting to find Jane when he does so tonight, nor does he expect to find in her in a state of distress (not to mention inebriation). He smells the smoke before he sees it, having been too distracted with its apparent cause, but soon enough he's striding towards the stove, his eyes wide as he tries to stay clear of the spatula's trajectory.

"Jane-- Is everything alright?"

"I've got it!" Jane declares, lifting her free hand above her head in a vaguely come-to-Jesus pose. "It was too hot, just a little- Whoa." Hand still in the air, she's turned and tilted her head back to look up at Thor. "You are so tall. I could climb you. Right now. Like a tree. Zoop!" She taps him on the end of the nose with her index finger and then finally drops her arm again.

His laughter's tinged with surprise, yet no less genuine for it. Admittedly, he can't think of anyone who's ever tapped his nose in quite such a manner, but there's something almost charming about the gesture, for all that it's also baffling. That he's quite a bit larger than her goes without question, but he hardly considers himself worth climbing.

"Zoop?" he echoes, stepping in a touch closer to gently pry the spatula from her hand. Though she be but small, it could prove a formidable weapon against someone more unsuspecting than he. "I'm unfamiliar with that word."

"It's not a word, it's a… thing- Hey! That's mine!" She grasps fruitlessly toward the spatula, clearly incensed. "I was doing very important cooking things with that. I need it, I…" He really is very close to her right now, all big and manly like he stepped off the cover of a romance novel. Are her bosoms heaving? She looks down to check. No, good, that would be totally weird. Unless she was dressed like a pirate wench.

Mental note: Find pirate wench outfit.

"I am drunk," she admits, terribly serious as she stares up at him again. "I will fight you for that, it is next on the list, it's…" She trails off, frowning at the three fingers she's held up until she curls one of them down. "Number two. Drink, fight. Let's go. I'm not scared of you."

"You intend to make your ancestors proud?" he asks with a slight grin, realizing immediately to what she's referring. Were it anyone else, he might accept the challenge as genuine, but as it is, it's laughable. While very clever, Jane's not exactly the Lady Sif. Forever keeping the spatula away from her, he moves the pan off the element, not entirely sure which of the knobs he's meant to turn to shut it off, but not liking the worsening state of the eggs, either. That done, he turns back to face her, and reaches for her hand, and with a carefulness that belies his size, moves to lower it, the pad of his thumb brushing against her knuckles.

Ducking his head, Thor's gaze is imploring as he adds, "Perhaps that would be best saved for another day."

Mouth open to launch another protest, Jane falters, her gaze shifting to her hand and then back to those bright blue eyes. "That…" she begins a little breathlessly, "That is so not fair." Lifting her free hand, she pokes him once in the center of the chest. "I know what you're doing, and I like it," she adds with an emphatic nod.

Why she insists on always hitting him, he's not entirely sure, but it's not a concern Thor chooses to let worry him at this time. Dropping Jane's hand with the barest of squeezes, he swallows a throaty laugh; if he knows to what it refers to, he's not letting on.

"You're very strange," he notes mildly, wondering if she'll even remember this conversation come the morning.

"Look who's talking!" Jane crows, her brown eyes rounding. "You fall out of the sky, just outta nowhere and are like…twenty feet tall. That is not normal. I'm the normal one, here." Pointing to herself, she nods a couple of times for emphasis. "Me. Not strange at all before you showed up."

Twenty feet tall is, surely, something of an exaggeration, but then, Jane is quite small; comparatively speaking, she's like a child next to him, the top of her head not even reaching his chin. It would be nothing for him to pick her up, and return her to her (hopefully) temporary home, but despite her misadventures in cooking, she seems stable enough on her feet. Even so, he moves around her to place the spatula back on the counter, and then rests his hand on her upper back.

"Then tell me more of your life before we met," he suggests, very carefully turning her in the direction of the exit. He'll eat later. "And I'll decide for myself whether what you say is true."

"Oh reeeeally?" replies Jane, her eyebrows lifting toward her hairline as she affords Thor a bawdy glance. "And exactly how are you going to do that? If it involves your tongue in my mouth, I have to warn you, I'm well above average in that arena." She nods a couple of times, a palm lifted as if swearing. "Way better than normal. What you got, that was just a preview."

Thor remembers their first (and only) kiss very well, and he would, in fact, agree that she was quite remarkable in that arena; if nothing else, she left an impression, albeit a different one than the one she's leaving now. Her response leaves him somewhat flustered, not quite sure how his tongue became part of the argument (that his thoughts immediately turn to Loki is problematic in the extreme), and he flashes her a baffled look. For a second, his mouth moves, but no sound comes out.

"I meant simply that you should talk," he clarifies at last, leading them out of the kitchen. "And that I would listen."

"I have to say, that's incredibly disappointing," Jane admits as she allows herself to be led. That there is a very large, very warm hand at her back (attached to a very large, very sexy man) means it isn't much of a difficulty. "I'm generous, though, I'm flexible. I'll let you change your answer if you want." Leaning closer, she adds in a stage whisper, "You want to change your answer."

The ways in which Jane is potentially flexible is not a line of thought Thor wishes to pursue, at least not in public, and so he sidesteps the issue entirely, an exhale of laughter he would never admit to be nervous escaping from his lips.

"Where were you born?" he asks, pushing valiantly ahead despite the circumstances.
