Children waiting for the day they feel good
It's not often that Max is quiet. He has his moments when he's sad, or he's thinking or when he's absolutely so happy he can't stand it but those times are few and far between.
But then Jason crawled out of his grave and Max pretty much shut up. He still doesn't really understand. Why he was in there and why that gravestone says he was dead. All he really knows is that he can't close his eyes without seeing his face as Max backed away. Like he was a monster or something horrible. Like Jason would hurt him when all he should have done was help. He hadn't been brave or strong; he'd been scared and he'd let Jason down.
His army is gone. They all vanished and there are no more conquests and no more battles to fight. He's not a king or a commander, anymore. He's a useless little boy. And this place is horrible and mean and he wants to go home. This place kills people all over again and stuffs them into graves and makes them crawl out again. People here are actually dead and just walking around. He avoids Jason at all costs. Hasn't seen him since that night and has even been trying to avoid Joe. He doesn't want him to know. Doesn't want him to know that Max was a coward and couldn't help and that he went home that night and cried like a little baby. Like a stupid little baby. He won't even put on he wolf suit. Because he's not a wild thing, anymore. He's just a boy.
He's been mostly sticking to the children's house but feels too restless for it, today. He just wanders. Wanders all over the island until he's sweaty and his feet hurt. That's good. It'll make him tougher. He should be stronger and bigger and he hates this place, today. He hates it. He's sick of it. He picks up the nearest rock and hurls it at tree, pleased when a chunk tears off. He picks up another and another, breath coming hard and fast. He hates this place.
