The provincial life was beginning to agree with me. Almost. No matter how much the heat tricked my mind into thinking the wine tolerable or the living conditions adequate, I remained a city boy. Not a day went by that I didn't bemoan my fate to Cicero, who, in a birdish sort of way, seemed to be getting annoyed by my complaints. After all, it ( Read more... )

"Does it do this often?" I gestured vaguely to the statue, not bothering to answer his question. The situation seemed fairly obvious as it was. "Does everyone here get a statue of their significant other or am I just lucky like that?"

"No gosling-minding on the island," I corrected absentmindedly. The kid annoyed me to a certain extent, but I just had to remind myself that I too had once been an annoying teenager with daddy issues and a chip on my shoulder. Though I never had a sword like that, something for which the world (and the family flat) is probably still grateful for. "And yes, this is the wife. Someone up there has a sense of humour."

I let the comment about clothing slide by for now. Personally, I wouldn't have found a lack of drapery entirely horrible under the circumstances. Helena most likely wouldn't have appreciated my thoughts. "I guess I'll have to find a place to put it."

I grimaced. "Thanks for the suggestion, but I've already thought of it. Still, if I can't have the real thing it is a nice gesture."

"I know. Trust me, I know. You don't not know about a lady like that being in the area." She was yet another one of the many Island Blondes of my acquaintance and definitely one of the more... prominent ones.

"Cupid is Roman, Eros is Greek," I pointed out, beginning a slow walk around the statue as I tried to decide just what exactly I was going to do with it. "I went through a major religious phase when I was twelve or so, so don't try pulling any of that on me. I know the difference."

"Possibly. Usually I don't go straight up to the big shots like that. I prefer to stick to the smaller gods when it comes to everyday stuff, they're the ones more like to pay attention to a nobody like me." I didn't know how much the kid knew about Rome, but there were gods everywhere and for everything. It was almost impossible not to be some level of religious and still function normally.

I shrugged. "I don't know. I've got a wife and two daughters and a pretty good life. I haven't died yet. Someone must be looking out for me, but I haven't seen them yet."

Did he think that gods just went wandering around the streets? That we were all on speaking terms with the Olympians? "You know they aren't just walking around Rome, don't you? Religion and all it's trappings are around everywhere, but not the Gods. There's barely enough room for the actual people without adding every faddish foreign deity that we take it into our heads to worship this month."
