The thing about the elevator in the Compound is that Olive can't think of any earthly reason it should be there. Granted, this isn't, she's fairly certain, any version of earth she's familiar with, so reasons of that nature don't actually apply, but, in spite of knowing there's very little use in it, she continues looking for some measure of logic in the way the island is laid out and the things that happened. It isn't that she thinks she can make sense of it in a way other people haven't, because there are people who have been here much longer and are, admittedly, much smarter than herself. She just wants to have a better grasp on things, or, at least, to enjoy the puzzle.
So the elevator. From what I've been told, it hasn't been here from the beginning. In fact, most of the floors of this building haven't been here from the beginning, but they showed up and then the elevator showed up, which leads me to all kinds of questions, like, why was there a sudden need for an elevator? What prompted that? Does it belong to someone? What used to go in that spot? Like, did things expand around it or did it replace part of several bedrooms or just - okay, yeah, sure, it's just an elevator. I've been on like a million. But it's an elevator that appeared for no reason out of nowhere in the middle of a building that isn't actually all that inhabited, despite being highly frequented, on an island where freaky shit happens. And the freakiest thing about an elevator? That's it's almost absurdly normal.
The truth is, Olive was just doing her laundry. She had a basket full of sheets and clothes and towels, and she brought it all the way up to the Compound because she put it off long enough she was left with a blue tank top and
a pair of floral-print shorts that she's pretty sure qualify as "so ugly they're cute." Doing the laundry was easy. She's used to that, she used to do her own at home, though the walk was much shorter, and it's a pretty simple task. It was the moment when the elevator dinged and the doors opened before she could get on the stairs that threw her off.
Now, she knows it was probably a case of someone pushing the wrong button and getting out early or pushing it and then deciding to walk, but when the doors opened and the elevator was empty, the only answer, clearly, was to get in.
And now she's been riding the elevator up and down for like ten minutes, even though she's seen every floor of this building already and, even on this island, she's pretty sure a new one isn't just going to spontaneously make itself known to her. She's kind of hoping it might, but really, it's more likely all just a matter of coincidence combined with how easily distracted she is. It's not much longer before she really ought to go check on her clothes and move them to the dryer, but she pushes another button, her laundry basket all but forgotten on the elevator floor. "You know," she says, "this thing doesn't have Muzak. That is weird."
[Feel free to have heard her or not, find her in it or wandering around on any floor of the building, ST/LT welcome. :D Closed now, unless you've mentioned tagging in to me already, in which case, you're still welcome to have at.]
