He's been thinking about this for a really long time, since before Lily Strombeck left the island. He's sat down with Rollie and Meredith. He's figured out the details. He's spent time in Lily's old office in the Hidden Hamlet, getting it set up to his liking. He's ready now and, honestly, it's about time. It's the field that he chose, back ( Read more... )

"Time for the big launch?" says Rollie, clapping Paul's shoulder as he catches up on the latest announcements. You never know when someone's going to put up something like 'Watch out for the herpes outbreak!' or 'Free steaks to the first taker!' Stranger things have happened. "Everything all set up already?"

"I think so?" says Paul, shrugging a little but grinning at Rollie like he can't help it. "The office is great and I've got supplies. All I need now is someone who's interested in the services, I guess."

He's delivered babies and given pelvic exams since he got here. It's just a lot of it feels...kind of like it happened by accident.

"Believe me, there are plenty of people around here who're going to want your services," says Rollie, "and plenty more who should." Just for a fleeting moment he imagines Karen being old enough to require Paul's services, and shudders a little. At least that's years off yet.

"I've got a delivery to look forward to, at least," says Paul, shhoving his hands into the pocket of his scrubs. He raises one eyebrow.

"What was that?"

There are so. many. jokes. that Rachel could be making right now. It's a serious topic, she gets that, but breast exams and Paul. She wonders if that's cheating? If she's actively fantasized about the person doing them.

Then again, she has a lot of sex. And she's getting tired of condoms. Maybe they have the pill or something.

"Hey," she says, sidling up. "You guys don't stockpile the Pill, do you?"

"I'm pretty sure the clinic could synthesise something," he says, arching an eyebrow. "You do know that the pill's only as reliable as you are, right?"

He's required to say this shit. Even as he gives her an entirely dubious look. "How ready are you for little cowboys, Rach?"

"That's not even a little bit funny," she warns, poking him in the chest. "If I get pregnant, I'm giving it to Tom. He seems like he'd be maternal. I just want to know my options. You know, be informed and shit. Would you have to give me a pelvic? That seems awkward. Like even I recognize that's awkward."

"Don't even joke about it," says Paul, paleing for a moment when she says it; he doesn't doubt that she's actually do it. He shakes his head. "No pelvic. I'd need to take your blood pressure."

They'd talked about it for a while, and it was no secret how proud Tom was of Paul for getting the ball rolling on something like this, especially after so many months of planning. He was lucky -- the both were -- that he could still do what he loved, even in a place like this.

"Hey," Tom murmured, his hand coming to rest on the small of Paul's back, easy and familiar. "Looks good, Doc. Let the procession of hormonal women begin."

"Like our lives aren't full of hormonal women already," says Paul, dropping his arm around Tom's neck. "Between Rach and Betty. All we need is for your Rachel to turn up and we'll have the whole fucking set."

"Man, don't talk about Rachel's hormones, please," Tom said with a wince, "That's not something I want to think about. Ever."

He knew his sister was growing up, and fast, but that didn't mean it didn't freak him out a little. Or a lot.

"They're going to happen whether you talk about them or not, Tom," says Paul, crooked smile and all. He rolls his eyes and then he squeezes Tom's hand.

"I can't believe I'm actually doing this."
