It was weeks since the space station had fallen out of the sky and life went on. It always did. Cable had lost just about everything a man could lose, in his time, and it hadn't ever stopped him from carrying on. The difference was, this time he had no mission to lose himself in. He'd always had plans, had fights, had goals and enemies and a reason ( Read more... )

That was... so much more of her brother than she needed to see. Really, it totally was. When he was a baby, that was different. Naked babies = cute. Naked adult brother = awkward. Not that she's prudish about things, but, the fact remained. Very. Naked. Brother.

And what do we say to our very naked brother?

"Uh... laundry day come late this week?"

If Rachel was feeling awkward, it was very much one sided. Cable understood intellectually the connotations that nudity could hold, that it carried a sexual subtext, but it wasn't something he felt himself. In his bones, he felt no difference between being naked or wearing clothes. Still, he didn't have to feel awkward himself to know that Rachel wasn't comfortable.

"I should fire my maid," he replied back, as he covered himself with the water bottle, for his sister's sake, before backing into his hut to grab some clothes, leaving Zero to cover his exit by running up to greet her.

"Or, you know, hire one?" She leaned over to scratch Zero behind the ears and feed him a treat she'd brought in her pocket.

"Any particular reason you're clothesless today or were you just in a mood?"

"It's my new gimmick," he told her when he returned wearing some pants and a top, smiling slightly at the way she always effortlessly won over his dog. "If I'm going to start proselytizing again, I need something to grab the attention."

"Seriously?" Rachel arched an eyebrow, not sure if he was entirely joking or being dead serious.

She gave the dog a few more scratches before straightening. "I had time in between classes and wanted to know if you wanted to have dinner tomorrow night?"

He always liked it when no one knew just how serious he was being so he didn't bother to explain.

"Of course," he replied instead. "What's the occassion?"

Rachel arched an eyebrow and chuckled. "You're my brother and we haven't had dinner together for awhile?"

She crossed her arms over her chest in mock indignation, "Do you mean to tell me I have to have an ulterior motive to have dinner with you?"

"We have to have an ulterior motive for everything in this family," he replied, smiling slightly. "It's a tradition."

"If having this lunch now doesn't give at least one of us an advantage that will be useful in four years time, I'll be disappointed."

"This meal will be absolutely useless. Well, except for the the fact that we're eating."

She walked over to him and took his arm, looking up with the best puppy-dog look she could manage.

"Does that mean you don't want to see me now?"

"It's always good to see you," he replied, a momentary look of horror crossing his face, as he realized they'd gone from distracting banter to something a bit more serious, "and I'm looking forward to the dinner."

That ... didn't seem to have been as disastrous as these conversations normally were for him, though he looked uncharacteristically nervous for a split second anyway.

Got him. Rachel smiled instantly and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Best brother even." Granted, he was really her only brother unless she was counting Stryfe or that strange Nate kid she'd heard about so... not much of a contest. But still.

She moved away, finding a seat and sitting down. "What have you been up to?"

Oh, good, that whole bit was over now.

"This and that," Cable replied. "Think I'm close to perfecting gunpowder."

Which was a blatant lie but he'd be damned if he was ever going to admit to anyone that after years of trying to make it, he'd just been handed some.

"Awwww." Rachel chuckled, tilting her head with a big smile. "You can go back to shooting and blowing things up. It must be Christmas."

He made himself smile slightly in response.

"It's long overdue," he told her. "Conserving ammo has never been something I'm that good at."

"And now that's a skill you won't have to work on anymore. You're free of it."

Rachel stretched up and then down, glad that Nathan was here for her to tease, glad that she had family. She was trying very hard to focus on that these days.
