She'd worked herself to the bone.

She needed to get herself into shape. She needed it. It didn't seem to matter that there wasn't any performance. There wasn't any opening. There was only Nina, and now there was Lily with her eyes smiles and dark eyes, and Thomas with all his concern that she didn't understand ( Read more... )

Although she hadn't been on the island long, Lily had been to the studio a few times already, relishing in the strangeness of an actual dance studio in the middle of this place. This was the first time she'd run into Nina, though, and she closed the door carefully behind her, taking care not to make too much noise. For a moment, she simply stood near the door, watching Nina, watching the strength in her.

If she'd had the chance to finish, she would have been amazing. Lily knew that.

"Hey," she said quietly, knowing Nina would probably see her in the mirror before she heard her if she didn't speak up now.

In the mirror, she was suddenly doubled, a darker, shadowed version of herself watching from the doorway.

Her focus wavered and she came to an abrupt stop, whirling around just in time for Lily to take shape in front of her.

"Hey," she echoed, struggling to look unaffected and as calm as Lily always seemed to be, with no effort at all.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt," Lily told her, pushing away from the door and coming into the dance studio, skirting the floor until she could change her shoes. "You looked good."

She meant that, even if she wasn't sure whether or not Nina would believe her.

"Thank you," Nina murmured with a hint of confusion in her voice. Not at the compliment, but Lily had a way of knocking her off balance, just by being in the room.

"I haven't seen you here, before. In the studio." It wasn't a criticism. Not really. It just seemed peculiar that they hadn't run into each other... Struck by a sudden rush of deja vu she couldn't explain, Nina wondered if maybe they had. Maybe they'd been there before. Maybe they'd had this exact conversation.

"I've only been here a couple of times," Lily admitted, dropping the bag she'd been carrying. "I had a hell of a time finding it initially. I kept thinking I was going to get lost in the jungle and end up wandering right back to the Compound without even realizing it."

Even with the boardwalks, nothing was familiar yet. She'd get there, but for now, she was still too new to know her way around.

"But now we're running into each other," she said, smiling.

Relaxing by a margin, Nina admitted, "I keep getting lost, too. I'm always afraid I'm going to walk into someone's house, by mistake. It's so strange how no one locks anything."

It was miles away from how things had been in New York. That constant state of paranoia, part of it warranted but most of it growing inside Nina's own mind, seemed increasingly out of place on an island where everyone seemed so trusting.

"I know. Nothing like New York," she said, nodding her agreement as she sat down and began to take off the shoes she'd worn through the jungle. "And everyone is super helpful, too. I mean, you could ask for directions from eight different people in New York and maybe one of them would help you, but here it's like everyone is just waiting for the right moment to show you where something is."

It was kind of cool, though. Lily liked being surprised by people; she liked seeing different sides to them that she might not have seen in New York or San Francisco.

"It must be because no one was born here. They were all as lost as we are, not that long ago," Nina said, watching Lily's movements, the tilt of her head, the way she smiled, the way her hands moved, all while trying not to stare.

"They all seem like such good people."

"Yeah," Lily agreed, stretching her feet, digging her fingers into her arches as she loosened up quickly. "Yeah, they do. I don't know, do you buy it? I mean, I don't think everyone is hiding something, but everyone on this whole island can't be that nice."

Or maybe they could be.

"So how far did you get?" she asked. "How many turns? You looked like you could've kept going."

"I don't think they'd have any reason to lie," Nina frowned, because it had occurred to her, despite every effort to see the good in everyone. She'd assumed it was her own paranoia, but she took a little comfort in known that maybe she wasn't alone.

"Twenty-two. I... I lost my focus. I wouldn't have finished." She could still feel the distant pull of vertigo, but that might have had nothing to do with the turns.

"Maybe you would have," Lily answered. It was a hard fucking movement to get down, but she'd seen Nina do it before, she'd seen her turn and turn across that stage, she'd seen it. Nina had it in her and Lily didn't know what she needed here to pull it out of her again, but she was confident it could happen.

"Do you want to go again?" she asked, putting her shoes on, then looking up. "I can wait."
