never gonna give you up

Let me put this out there before I say anything else. I don't usually get worked up over technology. It's there, I use it, let's move on. I don't have weird gadgets like some of the people here have and that's mostly because when you're dead, you don't tend to carry around a lot of worldly possessions. You can manipulate the environment around ( Read more... )

Chase had a lot of sympathy for anyone that was trying to argue with the jukebox. He felt it moreso when he recognized the guy from around the psych office. "If it does start working in your favour, tell me? Because I think it'll signal the apocalypse," he said, not entirely joking.

I looked over at the guy and, sure enough, he was someone I knew. I had noticed that happening more and more lately and I guessed that meant I was settling in.

"Dr...Chase, right? From the Psych office? And yeah, when Death comes in he'll be humming Rick Astley songs, clearly."

I hated the jukebox, but at least I wasn't alone in that.

"That's me," he agreed with a reassuring smile, unable to help but shrug. "I've been here over five years now, and not once, not once at all, has that thing done anything but torture me and the people around. Usually with Men At Work, at least, for me," he went on dryly. "Wouldn't you know, I come from a land down under."

I winced a little. The only thing worse than Rick Astley, I guessed, would be nonstop Men at Work songs. Didn't they just have the one, though? I wasn't sure.

"I guess there's not many Australia-specific songs. It could at least play nice and give you some INXS. I like them."

Chase wasn't much a fan of music once you got outside the seventies, so he really didn't have much of an opinion. He just didn't really like the stereotypes. "So, what's with this song?" Chase asked, more than a little clueless. "Sounds good enough to me."

"Rick Astley," I said, a little frown of disgust on my face. "It came out the summer after I..."

Okay, so I wasn't exactly mum on the fact that I'd died before I came here but other than Shari and Will, I didn't really want to advertise it. Shari because, well, she already knew and I figured therapy needed a little honesty to work.

"Graduated. High school.

There. Almost the truth.

Chase can't help a fond smile. Songs born of nostalgia could be the absolute best, but at the same time, they could be frustrating in that they brought you back to a time you might not want to relive. "How about we get out of here? Kitchen should be safe."

"Kitchen is fine with me," I agreed, more than happy to leave the stupid jukebox alone for the time being. "We might still hear a little of it but if I'm not in the room, maybe it'll shut up and I can get some...relative peace."

"Plus it might pick on some other poor unfortunate soul," Chase said with a bit of a smirk. "Not that I want someone else to suffer, but it won't be us, right?" He gestured to the counter. "Coffee? Tea?"

"Coffee," I decided quickly. I had never really been a tea person and while coffee wasn't my drink of choice, I liked having some once in a while. "What about you? Tea, right? Isn't that what they drink in Australia?"

"Usually, but I kind of hate tea," Chase admitted with a wrinkle of his nose. "Too weak for my blood." He set to work at the coffeemaker, digging out the sugar because it just wasn't a proper cup of coffee without a hefty amount of sugar. "Years of being up for med school and then residency has gotten me addicted to coffee."

"I am a fan of coffee," I said, grinning. I really was, but mostly just because I loved the smell of it first thing in the morning. I had never really been a morning person but a good cup of coffee went a long way toward convincing me of it.

"I've probably been drinking it since I was ten or something. That's probably stunted my growth."

"Yeah, but I bet it tasted good the whole time," Chase said, glancing over his shoulder. Sometimes, it was hard to separate his work from his outside life, but he wasn't having that trouble with Peter and he was more than glad for it. "How do you take your coffee?"

"Lots of sugar, no cream," I said, refraining from making a joke about it. I hated those coffee shop coffees all loaded down with milk and foam and so much crap that it was barely coffee any more. I liked a nice, regular cup of joe.

"So...how long have you been a psychiatrist?"

"It's been almost three years and a bit," Chase admitted as he dug out the sugar, sensing that they were going to need as much as possible. "I mean, I still work at the clinic, but the busiest trade is delivering babies. And I'm not saying I can't do it, but it got repetitive, you know? And I'd done my psych rotation back in med school...I had the basics."

"I don't think I'd be able to put up with years of babies," I admitted. I'd never had a desire to be a doctor or a lawyer, so I didn't really get the mindset of people who did.

"Did you always want to do the whole doctor thing?"
