It's nice out. This, in itself, is not unusual. In fact, to start as such is probably misleading, as there's nothing particularly unusual about one of the small scenes going on at the beach at all.
The scene in question is this: Charlie Crews is seated on the flattest of one of the outcrops of rocks that grace the beach, in a slightly modified version of the lotus position. His eyes are closed, and if not for the fact that he is still upright and the slow rise and fall of his shoulders, one might be forgiven in thinking that he had stopped breathing entirely. Cat lies by the base of the rocks, her head on her paws, tail swiping lazily across the sand. (She's been his main companion, lately. Sarah, although she's taken to Crews since his arrival over a year ago, is a more solitary creature. Perhaps it's simply feline nature. The important part is that his home is her home, too, and that's where she comes back to at the end of the day. That, and she hasn't eaten the koi.)
Dig a hole, fill it up. The six words run on a loop through his head, almost white noise along with the sounds of the sea. He's trying to be calm, trying to be zen, just as he's tried to be for over a year. There are days where it's harder and days where it's easier, and today is one of the former. His brief encounter of not-Roman left him undeniably shaken. As good as he tries to be, there is a part of Charlie Crews that harbors a survival instinct and a desire for justice (revenge) that he doesn't always manage to hide.
Roman Nebikov threatened the life of one of the very, very few people that Crews would put his life on the line for, and Roman Nebikov was part of the reason that Crews lost twelve years of his life (the reason that Crews was left behind by the entire world). Seeing his face, although he knows that the robot (or whatever it was) wasn't actually Roman, has still left an extremely bitter taste in his mouth. He knows that this isn't the sort of thing he ought to really think, but he knows, he knows that if Roman ever did show up on the island, he'd kill him in a heartbeat.
This general train of thought is what he's currently trying to put out of mind, and, judging by the clear - for lack of a better term - expression on his face, it seems to be working.
