Under the cover of darkness, Nicki Grant tiptoed down to the waterfall, wrapped tightly in a terrycloth bathrobe, her hair slicked back into a ponytail. There was a mischievous smile tilting her lips, her eyes darting around in search of witnesses, because in Nicki's world, she was about to get away with something scandalous.

She was alone. In more than just the immediate sense. An outcast in every place she'd ever lived, in every life she'd ever tried to lead, and there was a part of her that knew that she could no longer blame anyone but herself. Trying to be whatever it was she was expected to be, lying and cheating and stealing to hide all the way she just never fit. Growing cold and vindictive and underhanded. Even to the people she loved. Not knowing how to love, because of all the many things that were broken inside of her.

But this wasn't about trying to fit in. Maybe it would have been, months ago, but today, all she wanted was to have a little fun and she didn't care what Papa or Bill or any of the rest of them might think.

Stepping out onto the sand, Nicki crossed toward the falls, pausing on the edge of the water and dragging in a steeling breath. She loosened the belt around her waist and shrugged the robe off her shoulders, letting it pool at her feet and revealing the tiny bikini the box had given her week before. With a nervous bubble of laughter, she kicked off her sandals, adjusted her shoulder straps and stepped down into the water.

Maybe one day, she'd be able to do this in the daylight. Maybe one day, she'd be able to do this without feeling so much guilt. Without feeling like she was turning her back, once and for all, on everything she'd ever thought she believed.

[[Find Nicki at the large waterfall, after dark. This is a really good time to meet her. ST/LT always welcome]]
