Ever since the snow ended, there had been a bit of an extra spring to Bill's step, and it wasn't because of the return to normal island weather. Ron was on the island

Abby had been very fond of hugs for the last week. Every time she saw a friend, she hugged them, usually more than once. It was her own way of reassuring herself and them that she was still here.
She breezed into the kitchen for her usual Friday night date and immediately wrapped Bill in a big hug.
Suddenly finding himself with his arms full of Abby was never a bad thing, and Bill hugged her back without hesitation, pulling her close. "Hey," he replied, and pressed a kiss to her temple.
That was the kind of person Bill was. She gave him a hug and he saw her hug and raised it a kiss, which made her smile against his shoulder. Eventually she had to let him go, though, so she did.
"Not bad. Each day is better than the one before," she admitted, letting Bill take care of the coffee. Too many cooks syndrome and all that stuff.
"The girls are still really really confused, and I don't know how to explain it in a way they understand. I haven't been working in the lab much, just because I think I should be around for them and I have good helpers anyway. How're you?"
He was hesitant to say how he really was, knowing what was going on. "Not bad," was what he settled for, in the end. "Not quite able to work out yet that my brother's actually here, and has been for nearly a month."
Bill smiled wider at Abby's excitement, as much over seeing her smile as his own joy. "Ron, the youngest apart from Ginny," he replied. "He's from a couple of years after me, a few months after I'd married."
"Wow, that's gotta be a trip," she decided. "Last time he saw you, you were a happy newlywed with Fleur, and then he gets here and you're not even remotely married. And the last time you saw him, he was, what, a preteen and now he's a full teen?"
"He was the last time I saw him back home," Bill amended. "The last time I saw him, full stop, was on the island, and he was from a little further into the future than he is this time."
There had been multiple versions of the various people from Bill's world over the years, and honestly she'd stopped trying to keep track of them all.
"Do you ever want to make a chart of all this? I mean, you're from year X, he's from year X + 2, but the previous him was year X + 2.5 and the one before that was X - 3. Maybe an equation would be better, on second thought," she decided, since she'd just basically made one.

"Hi," she said unnecessarily.

Sure, she was sad, but hearing good news was even better after so much bad stuff.
