Ever since Claudia had discovered the laptop on her porch, she'd been listening non stop to the music that was on it. She'd been so excited to actually have her own music AND she was even excited over the dumb games that came with it. Minesweeper, Solitaire and FreeCell (which she actually hated, but hey! She so wasn't going to be complaining about ( Read more... )

I grinned as I saw Claudia very clearly enjoying the music. "You look happy," I said.

Opening her eyes, Claudia grinned at Polly. "Hey, it's Bowie! What's not to be happy about that?"

I'd heard of David Bowie, and the music sounded good. I wasn't as enthusiastic as Claudia, but I wondered if anybody could be. Still, it made me happy to see her happy. I nodded at her laptop. "Something from home, or did that just materialize in the, oh, last couple of weeks?"

Looking back at her laptop, Claudia shrugged. "I wish it was from home, but it's not. It just showed up on my porch one day. Which from what I understand happens sometimes?" She grinned again. "But it's totally kick ass. It's got all sorts of music on it. Zeppelin, and The Killers and Nirvana to just name a few.

"Yeah," I said. "Around this time of year. I got a bed. A little creepy, that, especially how it just materialized when my back was turned, but still appreciated."

"Seriously?" Claudia's eyes widened a bit. "That just sounds creepy...." She trailed off thinking though and then grinned again. "But is it a big comfy bed? I think that's the main question here."

"Yeah," I said, with a little laugh. "Rather creepy, but oh, so comfortable. Add that to the list of things I never thought I'd say before I was twenty-one."

Claudia chuckled. "Well I guess I'm lucky that I can pretty much sleep anywhere since I wasn't so lucky as to get a new bed." She patted her laptop though. "But this more than makes up for it."

Looking back to Polly, her eyebrows shot up and she flashed her friend a playful grin. "You actually have a list? What other stuff's on there?"

I laughed. "Well, it's not written down, but it's getting pretty lengthy, what with these past two years and all." I looked up thoughtfully. "Telling your nineteen-year-old mother that you're her daughter pretty much tops the list, though."

"Whoa. That is.. Wait, your mom is nineteen? Now that? That seriously tops the list of weird," Claudia informed her seriously.

"Well, she was, when I came here," I said. "I maybe shouldn't have said anything, but I was homesick, and when I saw her, I blabbed. Gave her one heck of a shock. I think she sort of resented me for that, but we worked things out."

"Daddy was here too," I added. "They'd been here for about two years before I showed up. Mother's gone home, though. Daddy's still here. It's been hard sometimes, but I'm glad they were both here, and together."

"Well I can see why you would," she pauses, frowning for a moment as she tried to figure out how she would react if her parents showed up. She didn't even know to be honest.

Shaking her head, she smiled again. "It must be weird to have a younger version of your dad around... I'm kinda just guessing he's younger..."

"Yeah, about my age," I said. "You might have seen him around. He teaches at the school. His name's Calvin. And it was odd. One minute my parents were young enough to be my older siblings. That certainly threw out the dynamic."

Claudia shook her head. "How'd he react when he found out about you? Are you guys still cool?" OK, so she was asking a whole lot fo questions, but she couldn't help it! She was a question type girl.

"He took it very well," I said. Better than Mother, I thought, but didn't say out loud. Though, to be fair, I did rather spring it on her. Daddy learned of me through her. "I didn't have to explain about time differences or anything like that. He... He made me feel welcome here."

It was awkward, but Daddy and I were friends, and I felt privileged about that.

"Well that's something!" Claudia grinned. "Must make it a little easier being here when you have family and stuff, ya know?" She thought for a moment. "Uh, do you call him daddy when you talk to him?" No, she's not being rude, she's just overly curious.
