Little Dreams

Medicine is about crossing boundaries. Real breakthroughs only occur where we are brave enough - or arrogant enough - to deviate from the path set in front of us by those who traveled it before.Three years. Meredith's just shy of three years spent living on this island now, years she counts in different ways depending on the moment: three years of ( Read more... )

"Ach, settle down, ye hellspawn," Sean says with a frustrated groan as he attempts to maneuver around Doc to where Meredith sits. It's been a long day, but that's been true of all of them recently and he wasn't anticipating having to run a gauntlet before getting the chance to relax some. "Figgered I'd find the two o' ye out here somewheres."

"Have I become that predictable?" Meredith asks, but her smile softens the already mild tone of disappointment. She's always been a little bit so, she knows that. Doc isn't easy to fend off, coming over to lie on the ground in front of them, rolling onto his back, so that she leans over to rub his belly as prompted. She glances up again. "Hi."

"Ah, ye're nothin' o' the sort. It cannae be helped when ye're dealin' with a keen investigative mind like this one," Sean says as he taps two fingers against his temple and moves to sit, his mood already lifting some now that he's in her company. "Hi."

"Oh, I forgot," Meredith says, leaning over to kiss him. "You're a deductive genius. Looking for me for a reason or just looking for me?" Either way, she's glad he's found her. Once Doc realizes he's being ignored again, he rolls over with a whine to hunt invisible creatures in the sand in front of them.

Rolling his eyes at Doc's antics, exasperated but bordering on fond for the mutt whether he'll admit it or not, Sean grins and leans back on his hands. "Some folk liked ta fancy me one back in the day, b'lieve it or nae. An' yer company's reason enae, far as I'm concerned."

"Good answer," Meredith says lightly. Setting the manual aside, she draws her legs up against her, turning toward him. "I was just reading. Slow day in the clinic - as usual." It hardly seems worth remarking on anymore. If a time comes when things are busy, nearly everyone knows about it before she gets home.

"There's a shock," Sean deadpans, shaking his head. Lord knows they could both do for a bit of action, even if history has shown that he needs to watch what he wishes for in that respect. "Nae 'xactly yer usual readin' material, though, is it?"

"It's for the training dummy," Meredith says, brightening up a little. It's not a perfect anecdote to dull days, but it makes for a change, at least, a little something more to do to keep her hand in. "Don't wanna screw it up by not knowing what I'm doing right out of the gate."

"Tchaa, there's no fun t'be had in readin' instructions," Sean scoffs, still grinning as he reaches over to try plucking them out of her hands. "Thought the whole point o' that thing was t'learn by doin'."

"And I want to do it right," Meredith says emphatically, laughing a little, letting him take it from her. She's not going to be getting any reading done with him here anyway. "I just wanna make sure I don't break the thing."

"Best way t'learn 'bout a thing," Sean says, shrugging as he tosses the manual gently over his shoulder. "Ye know I'd help ye fix it afterwards."

"And if you couldn't?" Meredith asks, brow raising. He's good, but she's not sure he's that good and she knows full well how expensive these damn things are. That may not mean anything here, but it's still ingrained in the back of her head and they're harder still to replace here anyway. "I do just wanna play with it, though."

"I try nae ta think like that," Sean says, a simple statement of fact. If he made a habit of worrying about consequences like that, his life would be a very different beast. "With all the geniuses 'round this place, I doubt there's all that much ye could do to't that someone couldnae fix. Ye know, if'n I prove too dim t'counter yer powers o' destruction."

"I didn't say that," Meredith laughs, leaning closer and shaking her head. "You're not dim. I'm just very destructive. We would have had supervision, using one of these at Seattle Grace." He has a point, though, which makes going home now all the more tempting.

"It was implied," Sean deadpans, not actually sounding put out by that in the least. "Either way, ye're the boss now, the supervisin' is s'posed ta be yer job. An' e'en if that weren't the case, it's yer new toy, nae some hospital's."

"My shiny new toy," Meredith agrees cheerfully. One thing's certain - she's not letting Doc anywhere near it. "It's just a little weird, having it in the house when I'd expect to see it in a lab. But it's fantastic. I can run scenarios, test myself. Use it for my classes."
