It had been a terribly long time since Jane had spent a good amount of time at the stables outside New Pemberley. She took care of her horses -- both hers and Mr. Darcy's and whomever was boarding at the time -- of course, but she did not see fit to linger. With the weather colder, she now visited more often ( Read more... )

Felicity was still feeling a little unwell, but not nearly as bad as yesterday. She also felt bad for neglecting Penny, and to make up for it decided to take her for a much longer walk (or run as the case usually turned out). The outcome of such meant taking a differnt path and for longer than they were used to traveling-not that it really mattered, as there was a path and moving would keep Penny from getting cold.

She pulled her to a stop when she came across a large manor like house, or more precise, the stables near it. She knew there were stables near the compound, and she had asked if some could be built near the Homestead, but as of yet she wasn't really aware of there being other stables being on the island.

One of the horses let out a soft whinny and Jane turned, seeing the girl almost as an afterthought. She smiled calmly, a passive little smile that did not outwardly reveal her to hand away her emotions too greatly. "Hello, there," she called.

As per usual, Felicity noticed the horses first, and of course Penny found herself curious as to see who these new types were.

"Hello," She replied, before looking at the horses again. "Are these yours?"

Penny knickered, but didn't move any closer-as she was now used to being in her own stall.

"One of them is mine, yes," Jane concurred as she brushed her hand over the white horse. "The black one belonged to my brother-in-law before he departed. But I take care of him now, and occasionally ride in order to keep him in good health."

The mention of her brother-in-law disappearing, Felicity felt herself back on New Years, when Coraline was crying into her shoulder from sadness that she couldn't hold back anymore.

Stupid, bloody island.

She shook her head, instead focusing on the horses. Penny followed her only with a mild curiousity-she was better with new horses than meeting new people, but she still preferred her own space.

"They must be even tempered then, I know Penny never lets me forget if I don't take her out for a walk atleast once a day."

"There is some space behind the house. I have my husband let them out if need be," Jane assured, slightly distant as she brushed the hair. "How long have you had yours?"

Felicity had to think on that. In truth, she'd known Penny for nearly three years (four if you included the island), but she had her for..

"Going on two years-three if you include the time on the island." That seemed to be a good answer. "She loves running around and being free, but our morning rides together are almost a ritual, we've been doinging it for almost as long as we've known eachother."

That was especially true when she belonged to Mr. Nye, and Felicity slowly gained her trust enough to take her on 'very' early morning walks.

"And how old are you?" Jane asked, a pleasant smile upon her face. She did look somewhat young and if she had known the horse for as long as years, it seemed as though they had been fast friends for a good time.

That was one way to look at it, for the longest time Felicty was the only human friend she did have.

"I'm twelve, but I've been around horses since I was six years old." She was actually scared of the creatures at that age, but grandfather helped her understand that there was nothing to fear from horses so long as you understood them.

"Where are you from?" Jane asked. It was a curious thing because she, too, had grown up around the creatures and though some others on the Island had the same upbringing, it was not universal and she did long to know where else these places were.

Felicity let Penny a little more into the stable, it was warmer than remaining outside.

"Williamsburg, Virginia," She said, then hiding a grin to herself. "1776."

It had become something of an in-joke with her, since when people usually asked her 'where' she was from, they usually meant 'when'.

She tried to not think of the conversation she had with Coraline-about her being 'perfect'. It wasn't true of course, but then the girl's been so distraught (and rightfully so) that she's not even sure if it's worth convincing her of her own troubles.

"I have heard of such a place," Jane said, searching through her mind for any recollection of the name. "I do not know terribly much about the Americas, though. Only that there is a great war there at the moment between us and the Americans and that they have taken a great number of our men for it."

She frowned and leaned against one of the posts. It's been the first time in awhile someone mentioned the war outside of scholastic.

"The last winter I was home, my friend Elizabeth's father was arrested-for no other reason than being a Loyalist, my grandfather was able to get him released. Then after that, my father was framed and nearly imprisoned so that a loyalist spy could get hold of the store."

No one she knew was a soldier, but that didn't mean they didn't suffer from the war either.
