I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die

Jan 03, 2011 09:28

Boyd has been incarcerated for over a month, now. It is hardly the first time and hardly the longest but it is the first that every day seems to drag on like an eternity. But it would be the same, outside these walls. There is a certain comfort in knowing at least he is receiving a small part of the punishment he is due. The true punishment will come from God, when Boyd is called from this place. His failure will surely be known throughout the Kingdom. It must be.

But Boyd's truest failure seems yet to come. Looming on the horizon of his mind, worming in like a disease. The niggling, small doubt that has laid seed that perhaps, just perhaps, Boyd did not hear a thing. That Boyd was not following God's orders, rather his own delusions. He tries to cast these thoughts away as soon as they enter, knowing they are the worst disservice he could do to the Lord. Doubting His existence. The Bible speaks of an unforgivable sin, and it is widely thought that denial of God is the sin a man cannot come back from.

Boyd is a wretched man. He sleeps little, but does eat now, watched over closely by the young Mr. Todd and Raylan. It is kindness he does not deserve but the flesh is weak and is grateful for it. They talk of counseling, which he expects to be arranged any day. There is nothing found in any textbook that will 'cure' Boyd, though. Boyd's dealings are with the Lord and the Lord will deal with him justly. And if it is truly all in Boyd's mind, then he is far beyond the reach of his fellow man. He is lost without hope.
