After a good week and change, Gwaine is starting to have to admit that maybe he's not exactly dead. He doesn't think dead people's hearts beat so quickly. And as strange as all this is, he's not about to rule out a strange kind of magic. Who knew how powerful Morgana and Morgause made themselves, after all ( Read more... )

Zelda had grown used to the snow in the month that it had been around but she would never get used to the idea that, for some reason, it was meant to be thrown on other people. Luckily, she'd dressed in a heavy velvet dress and hooded cloak today, more in keeping with how she'd dressed in Hyrule than how she usually dressed on the island.

"Ah! I didn't realize there was a target painted on my back. Perhaps next time I should wear a different cloak," Zelda said dryly, brushing the snow off before she got chilled.

Gwaine's lips twist up in something that looks like bemusement, but there's a dangerous readiness to his stance. The sword is only a step away. It's not that he doesn't trust her, but he's seen women in dresses and cloaks like that maliciously try and end lives for the sake of nothing at all.

He's grown wary of women in dresses like that. "Perhaps I'll allow a trial the next time," he grants, not taking his eyes off her. "Will I earn the right to know who I've wronged?"

"Oh well, of course," Zelda said, laughing a little to break the tension. "Zelda, formerly of Hyrule and lately of the island. Normally I'm not in such a foul mood but I really don't care for the cold. Especially not when bombarded by snow."

She supposed it could be fun, if she relaxed a little.

"Well, you were looking so perfectly a target, there," he has to admit, a devious little grin on his lips, absolutely not remorseful about his fun. "I'm Gwaine. Of Engred and Albion and Caerleon and Camelot and...well, I could go on. But I'm here now."

Zelda dipped her head a little in reverence. "It is a pleasure to have met you, Gwaine of Engred and Albion and Caerleon and Camelot. Have you any titles to go along with such a varied set of origins?"

She smirked a little at his grin, mood lightening.

He offers a smile and thinks of the pendant weighing heavy on his chest and of Arthur's faith in him, but he merely shrugs. "None that I've had long enough to actually think belong to me," is his answer, which is truthful, but careful. "And you? Beyond being beautiful past the telling of things."

"Hmm, I was a princes once," Zelda admitted, frowning thoughtfully. "I don't think that really means much here, considering the island has no titles, but I was once Princess Regent of my homeland."

"And that would be Hyrule," Gwaine specifies, standing and clearing his throat as he bows. "I should've known you were a Princess. Lord knows you're beautiful enough for it. And that name..." He lets out a whistle, flirtatious grin starting to come back in spades. "Must be an exotic place, where you come from."

"Exotic compared to here, possibly," Zelda said, shrugging a little. "Zelda is an incredibly common name in my homeland, to the point where most firstborn royal princesses have it for their name, at least in part."

"Well, then, my common Princess," he remarks with a bow of his head. "You're not the first Princess I've met, but you may very well be the first one with an actual pedigree beyond the beauty," he admits with a sheepish grin -- that bears very little modesty. "I'm the only Gwaine I know. And if there are others, I'm the best one."

"You're certainly the best Gwaine I've ever met," Zelda said, nodding once in assertion of that fact. "Have you been here long? I've been here for, oh, I think about nine months now. I didn't realize it'd been that long until I just thought about it."

"Not long at all. Two weeks? Long enough to make a trip out to see the beasts and to get their blood all over my sword," he complains, lifting it up to show the small stains and remnants of beast that just won't come off.

Zelda arched one brow. "For sport or did you arrive there and have to fight your way through?"

"Sport, mostly. When someone tells you that there are beasts lingering just outside your reach, well..." He trails off and gives a sheepish grin that doesn't really say he's sorry for what he did. "I made sure to observe and tried to pick one off that looked near the end of things."

"I suppose I cannot be too upset about that," Zelda said, trying to decide what it would be like to hunt for sport and not sustenance. "I've never gone hunting solely for the pleasure of it. I always had some other aim in mind."

"And what did you hunt, lovely?" Gwaine wonders, looking over the girl and thinking what sort of weapon she'd bring with. When Guinevere came along with the men, he'd figured her for a sword type -- maybe a dagger, at that.
