The idea of a snowfort was simple in its elegance. Even better was when the snow was just slushy and wet enough that snowballs could be made and added to the armory. Castle was well-aware of his strategic positioning in his fort and had his back pressed against the lower section of the fort, taking in his supplies.
“Should we send for reinforcements?” he very seriously asked Alexis as he scrambled to peer up above the edge of the fort, his scarf catching at snowflakes and dragging them with him as he sits back down. “This could be a long, arduous campaign. We may need hot chocolate and-or espresso.”
Alexis paused in making snowballs, snow clinging to her hair and her jacket, and glanced over at her dad. “You could be right,” she said, her tone as serious as Castle’s. “We may well need to dig in here for a while. We’ll need a good supply of hot chocolate if we’re going to make it.”
“Do you think Beckett would shoot me if I called her all the way out here to bring us refreshments?” Castle asked, well-knowing the answer already. He peeked up over the edge of the fort, scrambling back down for snowballs. “Incoming!” he hissed. “Prepare battle stations and go to maneuver four point one!”
“Dad, do you even need to ask-” Alexis started to reply, but clamped her lips shut at Castle’s words and sprang into action, positioning herself in her carefully planned strategic place right next to her giant pile of snowballs, where she could defend the fort from the best angle. “Ready on your signal, Captain!” she whispered, kneeling in the snow.
Castle was proud of Alexis in that moment. Really, it was a milestone, the sort that every father hoped for -- total independence and complete trust in a vengeful snowball fight. “Ready,” he hissed, “aim,” continued, and stood up, snowball in hand, “fire!”
On cue, Alexis shot to her feet with her dad and let one fly as he did. It was definitely a good day.
