I haven't been sleeping well. Strange things happen on this island, and it's nerve-wracking not to know what to expect next. I know this is an odd thing to be nervous about, coming from someone who has since the age of five been disappearing and reappearing in time and space, with little warning before it happens and no control over when or where I go or how long I will stay there. I am edgy and have been keeping to myself the past few days, running on the beach until I can't help but collapse from exhaustion where ever I might end up; under a tree, behind a boulder, someplace in the the compound if I've come inside for a shower or a meal. The strangest thing is that I haven't time traveled at all. Stress has always been a trigger, and I am stressed. I want to go home. I want to wake up in my own bed with my wife. Not alone on this island, where strange things happen, like a four year old boy waking up to find himself in the body of a witch. Beyond strange.
I've had breakfast, coffee. Maybe I want human contact. I don't know. Clare is not here, and she's who I really want to tell this story to, the story of my Crazy Island Adventure, so much odder and more interesting than just finding myself naked in the stacks at the Newberry yet again. I'll tell her and we'll laugh and it will all fade into the hazy realm of remembered dreams.
It's too quiet in the rec room. I go to the record player (I explained the concept of recorded music to a real knight! I tell Clare-in-my-head; she raises a disbelieving eyebrow and shakes her head.) and rummage through the albums there. Pink Floyd. Sinatra. Aida. My mother's recording. My hands trembling, it takes me a few tries to get the needle in the groove. I close my eyes as my mother's voice fills the room. I am small again, safe. More fit for contact with other people again.
Summary: Henry finds an album of his mother singing and plays it on the record player in the rec room. There is talk about mothers music and secrets with Buffy, Astrid, and Anthony Blunt. There is also massive silliness with Riddick, involving the use of dishes as weapons.
