For Lucy, that she'd been nominated for the Council at all still seemed incredibly surreal, let alone the fact that she had somehow managed to get elected. While it was just about the last thing she ever would have expected for herself, it made a certain kind of sense all the same. Even as the girl who'd been involved in starting riots, she had still been trying only to make a difference. Now, she was just going about it from the other side of things. In some ways, she really had changed a lot from who she had been when she'd arrived here. In others, she hadn't at all. Strange as it all was, she couldn't help but think that she had made the right decision in going for this ( ... )

"Congratulations."

Although parties weren't really his scene (they never had been, even during college), Laurence had voted, and as such, he figured he'd put in an appearance. When he'd heard about the election, he'd decided that voting was probably something worth doing. He didn't know most of the people here, sure, but he'd semi-accepted the fact that he'd be here at least a little longer, and as such, he might as well participate in something that would have an effect on how he was to get along.

"Thanks," Lucy said, her grin more instinctive than anything else, an impulse that still struck her as slightly strange. She wasn't wasting time dwelling on how things had consistently been before this past month, though, not at a time like this. Shifting her weight a little, not quite still, she gestured out at the rest of the party with the hand holding a cup. "Having a good time?"

Lucy's had been the only name he recognized. That said, their interactions in the clinic during their respective recuperation had been enough for him to go for it, anyway.

Trying to push aside his usual dry attitude given the generally happy air of the party.

"Better than I've had for a while," he said, which was, all things considered, completely true.

"Yeah, you know, that actually makes two of us," Lucy said wryly, one corner of her mouth pulling a little higher than the other. There was no harm in admitting it; it wouldn't have any bearing on her mood now, when she was an elected official and had a boyfriend of whom she was incredibly fond wandering the crowd. "So, that's good."

He mirrored her smile, glad, to some extent, that for once he could carry on a conversation that didn't involve constant threat level assessments.

"How often does this happen?" he asked, gesturing the general direction of the bulletin board. It wasn't a process he'd paid much attention to up until the actual election, but that didn't mean he couldn't still glean a few facts from the aftermath.

"Every six months," Lucy answered, gaze turning in the direction of the bulletin board when he indicated it, lingering over her own name again. She still could hardly believe it, in the best way possible; for a moment, she couldn't help wondering what her brother would think, if he were still here, seeing his little sister all grown up, an elected official. "And then we do it all again."

As I wandered by, I caught sight of Lucy's face and paused, offering her a smile. "Hey, Lucy," I greeted, and offered her my hand to shake. "Congratulations, I'm really glad you made it. Your speech was great." I'd known Max better, but I knew Lucy had a good head on her shoulders and after her speech, I trusted her to do right by everyone.

"Thanks," Lucy said, returning the smile as she shook Shari's offered hand. However much her having been elected might have said in itself, she was no less grateful to have what amounted to some level of reassurance. It meant a lot coming from Shari, who had both been around for a long time and had experience on the Council already. "You, too, on both counts. I'm really looking forward to serving with you."

"Are you ready for tomorrow?" I asked with an arch of my eyebrows, then smirked. "I know it's probably bad manners to talk business at a party, but maybe I can be forgiven when it's a party for business." There was also no doubt in my mind that the trouble with Boyd Crowder was weighing on all of us.

"Don't worry, I have no problem talking business," Lucy assured her, tone a little wry, though she mostly sobered a moment later. Truthfully, most of the time, she was more inclined to talk business than party anyway. Even before the results of the election having come in, she'd given a lot of thought to the bomb scare of a couple weeks earlier, reminded ever so distantly of something Jude had once told her about her supposed future. "I feel pretty ready. I wouldn't have expected to wind up with something so big right off the bat, but I think we're up to it."

"I think we've got a good group," I agreed with a nod, although in truth, there wasn't a Council I could recall off the top of my head that I didn't trust to do what was best. That was the whole purpose, after all.

"I guess we should just be thankful things weren't worse than they were," I added with a knowing glance Lucy's way. "It could have been really, really bad."

"Yeah, you can say that again," Lucy agreed with a sigh, eyebrows raising for emphasis. "Just the fact that no one got physically hurt is... more than a little relieving." It didn't change the fact that they were going to have a lot to deal with come tomorrow, but she was fine with that, wouldn't have run at all if she didn't think she would be. "I think you're right, though, about us having a good group."

"I'm not sure if I should congratulate you, or berate you all for beating my daughter," Keith said, who nonetheless had a hand extended for a congratulatory shake.

He'd have to check to see how she'd taken it. Could go either way, he thought; it wasn't like she had an empty schedule now, at any rate.

"I think I'd rather have the congratulations," Lucy laughed, taking the offered hand, in too good a mood to have any other reaction. "If you want to berate the other four, though, well, I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with that. Just don't tell anyone I said so." She paused, then added, "There're congratulations in order for you, too, aren't there?"

"I am the new lord and emperor of the police department, yes," Keith said, then paused and slapped his forehead. "No, wait, that's what I was before. Now it's fool and scapegoat. My bad."
