happy 50th!

Somehow, despite nearly giving it away a few times, Sam managed to keep Jack's surprise party a complete secret from him--Daniel was a big help in distracting Jack so Sam could Get Things Done especially in the last day or so. River offered up the beach near Serenity for the party, which worked out perfectly. There was music playing from a laptop ( Read more... )

Jack had actually been pretty shocked by the whole birthday business since he didn't know Carter knew when it was (but he should have figured) and he thought all her secretive planning had really been wedding stuff.

There was his girl, in a shiny peridot dress and there was cake, so Jack was a happy guy.

"Pretty good for an island party, gotta say."

"Well, I'm glad you like it," Sam said happily, offering him a plate with another piece of cake. "More birthday cake? I made it myself."

"You had me at cake," Jack said, grinning wide and taking a bite. "You know, we can share. If you want."

"Ha," Sam said. "I already had a little piece. I had to make sure it was edible before I let anyone else eat it. I was going to ask Vala to make a back-up cake in case this one sucked."

Since Juliet's been on the island, the damn clothing box has only given her tank tops. Different colors and different degrees of casual, but all tank tops. She was given jeans, slacks, skirts, and shorts, but never a nice top. Until she let Helen go in with her in mind and came back with a dress.

Well. And go figure, it doesn't have sleeves either. It's not even a dress she'd normally wear, it's a dress her sister would wear, but it's better than the usual. Helen even gives her shoes to wear, nice strappy heels, and Juliet has to admit it's nice to get dressed up. Her hair is long and down her back, not completely straight because of the damn humidity, but a little wavy. She's armed with a bit of lip gloss and mascara and applies it before heading to the beach.

Just before she hits the sand she waits on Will, hoping he's still coming and wondering if she'll actually know anyone other than Jack - she doesn't really know Sam all that well.

Sam saw Juliet hovering at the edge of the beach and went over. She hadn't talked to her much since Juliet showed up in her hut that day, but since she was a neighbor, she wanted to get to know her. "Hey, Juliet," she said. "Glad you could come. Waiting on somebody?"

Now that Juliet is seeing her again, she can understand Helen not coming, but honestly, Juliet could never mistake the two. She gives her a warm smile. "I am, but it's possible he's already mingling. Do you know Will Zimmerman?"

"Um, I think I met him once," Sam said, and then nodded, grinning. "Oh yes, I did, I remember now. I look just like his boss and it startled the crap out of him. He got coffee everywhere." It had been one hell of a spit-take. "He's not here yet, I don't think."

River liked Sam, and she liked Jack, and she liked parties, and it wasn't as though she had invited a bunch of people to come inside Serenity. It was a free beach, and if having a spaceship nearby made someone's birthday nicer, she was pretty sure Serenity wouldn't mind.

Besides, it was easier to convince Zoe not to keep trying to eat sand when there was cake to offer as an alternative.

It had taken a while, but Jack made his way over to River and Zoe to say thanks for letting his shindig get held over by the Serenity. It didn't look like a ship he was used to, sure, but it was a ship and a little reminder of home no matter how small.

"Thanks for helping with this, River," he said, grinning wide. "Really means a lot."

"I didn't really do very much," River answered honestly. She didn't want to take credit she didn't deserve. "Sam was just looking for a place to have a secret party, and this is a nice part of the beach for parties."

Zoe looked up and waved at Jack, offering her version of the Chinese greeting ni hao that they used on Serenity. "Ow!"

"Ow yourself, kiddo," Jack said, waving back. He loved kids, always had, and there were plenty of them running around on the island for his amusement. He looked back to River.

"Still, having a party next to a spaceship's the closest thing I've got to home, so I have to give credit where it's due. When's your birthday?"

Guy knew Jack in passing and because he was Daniel’s friend. Daniel’s very good friend, for which both had been taunted in the past. The taunts had since long died out. (Taunts of this kind are just not as fun when the subjects of these taunts are simply content with their respective prospective wives.)

If he had made an effort in looking neat, it was lost to the public eye as usual. If the shirt he was wearing was one that Cole had said looked good on him, he would deny that he was wearing it for that reason. So he stood there, cigarette between his lips, singing the last lines of happy birthday, with gritted teeth as he tried to find a place to set down his drink to applaud to the birthday boy.

"Guy!" Daniel was pleased to see him. He hadn't expected Guy to come out for one of his friends when he was fairly sure they had never met...or maybe they had once or twice. Daniel wasn't sure. Either way, seeing Guy was a surprise and a pleasant one at that. ...as long as he was mostly sober during the entire event.

It was no question that Felicity decided to attend Jack's party: the man reminded her both of father and her grandfather on the island after all. Actually, when she thought about it, in the next month she would've been on the island for an entire year. She may've not had her family from here Williamsburg, but inspite of the disappearences, she still had some sort of a family here.

Even though it wasn't that big of a part, production wise, Felicity arrived where a tye-dyed dress, knowing Jack would appreciate the effort. She also brought a baseball glove incase he wanted to play catch later on.

"Have you got any cake yet, Felicity?" Jack had been trying to make his rounds at the party and it was hard, considering that being the birthday...guy made him sort of a celebrity.

"Not until I wish you a happy birthday." She said, giving him a tight hug. With all the birthday guests about, she wasn't sure if or when she'd have the chance to properly wish him a happy birthday.

Jack hugged her back and dropped a kiss on her hair before letting go. "Best birthday present I've gotten all night. Now, of course, I'm insisting on cake. Sam made it herself."
