"Somehow, I don't think he'd like that." Gabrielle said with amusement as she watched the scene, leaning on her staff. "But if you want to get wetter, I'd certainly wouldn't protest watching that."
"The point is to get him more wet, actually," he replied. He didn't need to turn to know who was watching. "If he didn't want to take one, he shouldn't have gone and gotten dirty. I warned him."
"Maybe your not using the right motivation." Gabrielle was thankful she wasn't wearing the skirt she'd arrived in today but instead a skirt made of some stretchy material that seemed to be made to use in water and a matching top that was a bit smaller then her green one. But she still had her belt and her staff, both of which she left a ways from the water, after taking a piece of dried fish from one of the pouches on the belt.
She wadded into the water in front of the large canine and held it out to him. "Here you go. Come on. I promise, if you come in, this is yours." She said sweetly to the animals.
That was all Duncan needed, apparently. The moment he noticed the food being offered, he barked and headed right into the water toward her, not flinching once as the water got deeper.
"Oh, sure, you'll do things only when bribed," he sighed, though he shot Gabrielle a grateful smile regardless. The dirt was already washing off, even with him just standing in the water, waiting patiently for the fish.
Giggling as she gladly handed over the bit of fish, Gabrielle then ran her hands through Duncan's fur, helping the dirt along. "You won't believe how many apples I went through to get my friend's horse to like me. It was after I finally figured out that Argo liked green ones better then red ones that she finally let me near her when Xena wasn't around." She recalled as she kept petting Duncan.
"Well, in the horse's defense, green apples are delicious," he pointed out as he followed Duncan in, soap in hand. He was clearly enjoying the attention he was getting. Looking between the two, he added, "It seems you've made a lifelong friend already here."
"I guess. I never really noticed the difference!" Gabrielle said with a laugh as she helped soap up Duncan. Then she ducked down to kiss the top of the dog's head. "Well, I guess I could do worse in the world. What's his name?"
"Duncan," he said, as the dog behaved for Gabrielle. Alistair had a suspicion that Duncan just didn't want to listen to him. "He's a hound from the world I'm from. Apparently it's a type that's not present anywhere else, from what I've heard."
"Well, I've never seen any dog like him before, especially one this handsome." She said, lapsing into that cutesy voice everyone dipped into when talking to animals as she scratched behind his ears. "Did he come with you then?" She asked in her normal voice again.
Duncan barked happily, lifting his head to lick at her hand. He never was shy about taking compliments.
"Not exactly. I did travel with a mabari back home, but he wasn't mine. This one just showed up one day not long after I came here and acted as if I were his master all his life," he explained. It didn't make sense to him even now, but he was grateful for it. Usually. "Apparently this...place, this island, it gives people things as gifts. I suppose he was mine."
The happy licks made her giggle and her smile brighten. "Good boy." She'd never thought of herself as much of an animals person but then she'd never really tried before, except with Argo. And Argo was a whole other story, just like her owner.
"So...this place steals us from our home, but gives us things to make up for it? This whole situation just gets weirder and weirder the more I learn about." She said thoughtfully. "I guess its too much to hope for something to make sense."
"I've long given up myself. This place is full of so many strange things, I try not to add to the problem," he grinned. With Duncan currently distracted, Alistair quickened his efforts. The faster he was clean, the better. "So long as I am not turned into anything by whatever magic or...whatever else could be doing this isn't turned on me, I am content."
"I guess." She conceded as she helped work the soap into Duncan's fur, using her nails to scratch his skin. "But I know myself too well. I want to know everything! Like abut all the strange appliances in the Compound and that other residents have brought from home. The kitchen was just the beginning," She admitted as she flushed, slightly embarrassed still over the day she'd burned herself on the machine she now knew was a stove.
"Perhaps you can learn and can teach me once you do," he said with a laugh. He had the same sort of curiosity, really, but had a sense that it'd probably blow up in his face. "Have you seen the large metal ship on the beach? I've heard it's traveled beyond the sky."
Fortunately for Gabrielle, the blowing up her face was half the fun, since then she had a story to tell about it. Her eyes went wide as he described the ship on the beach. "I've seen it, but does it really travel to the stars?" She thought for a minute, trying to recall something Rachel had said. "Does it have...rockets?" After their conversation about going to the moon, she'd desperately wanted to know what a rocket was.
"I...don't know what rockets are," he admitted sheepishly. He had just been told that the ship had gone upwards, beyond where the birds could fly. That alone was something hard to wrap his head around. "Does it help it lift up?"
