Gabrielle wasn't one to give up on a challenge. She'd always had to cook the meals while traveling with Xena since the warrior could only be relied upon to burn a piece of meat. Oh sure, she'd been horrible at hunting, but she could at least cook ( Read more... )

Food. Food was generally a great idea and Rachel was hungry after trying to get the bookshelf to cooperate. Was it too much to as that she get some of whatever those reports were that Nathan had? She wanted to know what was going on at home, she'd been in space for so long...

She entered the kitchen and stopped cold. Was that girl talking to the oven? Yes, it appeared she was.

"Um... problems?"

Gabrielle spun in surprise when she heard the voice behind her and she took a moment to take a deep breath to calm down. She realized how absurd she must look to someone who probably knew how to use all of these thing but she was getting really tired of playing catch up.

"What is that thing?" She asked, pointing at the offending stove. "And how was it cool to the touch one moment and then hot the next?" As she spoke, she couldn't help rubbing her burned elbow, wanting to understand what had happened more then she wanted to deal with the pain at the moment.

Rachel headed towards the confused woman. "It's an oven, you cook in it." She quickly turned off the oven, and offered her hand. It might be strange to run into a person that didn't know what a stove was, but then she's met her fair share of time travelers and aliens so...

"You should run some cold water over that burn, then I can show you how to use it, not that I'm a cook or anything..." She shrugged, "...but at least I know how to turn it on and off?"

Hesitating for a moment, Gabrielle took the other girls' hand and let her led her to the sink. "That would be great. I understand the oven, it's the surface on top that has me confused. Well, and turning it on." She took another deep breath then gave the girl a small smile. "Thanks. I'm not from the same time as everyone else, if you couldn't tell."

Archie strode purposefully into the kitchen and to Gabrielle's side, having stepped into the room only just in time to see the woman burn herself but not in time to stop it.

"You're worse than me in a kitchen," he observed with a light, warm and kind laugh, flipping all the switches immediately to their off position.

"Come here," Archie directly, gentle but with an underlying firmness, and gestured to the sink. "Cold water for your burn first. I learned that trick my first time cooking in the kitchen, too."

"It would help if I knew what all of these stupid things did." Gabrielle grumbled as she let Archie led her to the sink. She took a deep breath, as the cold water felt really good on her burned skin. "Thanks. I don't think I'm ever going to catch up with the rest of the island at this rate."With a sigh, she hoped she didn't sound as dejected as she felt. It was really beginning to wear on her.

Leaning against the counter, Archie moved to a conspiratorial distance between himself and Gabrielle. He couldn't help but feel a connection to a girl so good-natured and so far behind the times, just as he was once. Still was in some ways, just not as noticeably.

"It'll come," he told her. "Be patient with yourself. It's hundreds of years you're catching up on. That comes easily to no one."

Archie's reassure made Gabrielle smile despite herself. It was nice to know she wasn't alone in being lost. "I can't believe so much has changed. It's hard being patient. I just want to know!"

"It's just an appliance, Gabby," says Cooper, sounding faintly amused. His Mom and Dad used to work pretty long hours, some days, so Cooper's pretty good with a stove. He can make, like, basic shit; enough to keep his sisters happy, anyway.

He reaches out, taking hold of her wrist so that he can examine her elbow.

"Did you burn yourself?"

"It's just an appliance that everyone else knows how to use." Gabrielle said before she could help herself from frustration. Then she sighed and forced herself to take a deep breath to calm down.

"No....Ow! Yes, yes I did!" While she denied it at first, she couldn't deny how much it hurt when he examined it.

"Relax. I'll show you after I take care of your fucking elbow," he says, steering her towards the sink and reaching to turn on the faucet. "Here. Hold it under the cold water for a minute," he says, leaning his hip against the counter.

"Lesson number one - don't lean on the fucking stove."

The cold water made Gabrielle breathe a sign of relief. Oh that felt good.

Of course, once she wasn't in pain, she was free to glare at Cooper. "It wasn't hot a few minutes ago! I don't know what I did to make it hot either."

Had Felicity been back home, it would've been dinner time, but on the island that had moved to later in the evening. So she had to search for herself. She was just entering the kitchen just as Gabrielle burned herself on the stove top.

She walked over, frowning a little when she saw that the stove top was still on. No wonder Gabrielle had burned herself.

"You left them all on 'medium'." She said, reaching over to turn the dials so they were 'off'. She went to explain how it worked, but then she noticed the burn. "You should run some cold water on that."

Felicity back home would've used some sort of grease, but she had read that grease on a burn only made it worse.

Gabrielle leaned down and squinted at the dials and saw something written there. But she really didn't want to admit that she couldn't read it. "Oh. Okay."

She walked over to the sink and started running cold water over her elbow. "So, I think I get the bottom part as an oven but what's the top for?"

She noted the squinting, but it could've just been the tiny writing.

"The top part's the stove." She explained, waiting for her to return so she could show her. "Instead of using a fire place, this has what are called 'burners' where you simmer, boil and fry things. The settings 'low', medium, and high are to show how high you want the heat to be, the dots indicate which knob goes for which burner, and when the light is on, it means the surface is hot."

Felicity remembered all of this being new to her, so she couldn understand the confusion.

When Gabrielle returned, she nodded along as Felicity explained how it worked. "So...they're like cooking on rocks you've put in the fire to heat up, but with more control. Interesting." She reached out and turned one of the knobs, holding her hand at a safe distance above one of the burners to feel the difference in heat. "Very interesting."

"Are you okay?" Cissie had ventured into the kitchen in the hopes of a snack but upon seeing the woman struggling with the oven, she'd reversed her direction to the refrigerator and gone over to her. "Ooh, that looks like a nasty burn - and I thought I was bad at cooking!"

"Give me a campfire and I can cook most anything. Who needs all these things anyway?" Gabrielle grumbled more then anything, frustrated at not knowing what everyone else did.

"Most people nowadays," Cissie said, trying not to laugh. It wasn't funny, not really. She was clearly not from modern times and having to adjust to that as well as the island? It couldn't possibly be much fun at all.

"Here, let me see your arm. If you burned it, we need to get some water over that."

"Really, what has this world come too?" Gabrielle grumbled with a shake of her head as she moved over to the other girl so she could look at her arm. "I made it heat up somehow, though I really couldn't tell you what I did. What is it anyway?"
