It was sheer boredom that found Helen at the bookshelves before her clinic shift, trying to find something to bring along with her so that the hours would go by just a little more quickly. She loved being a doctor and loved practicing medicine, even in a place as relatively healthy as the island, and she would take a handful of patched elbows and scraped knees over having nothing to do at all. But still, she needed to be physically in the clinic in order to be on staff and that usually meant a stretch of hours with very little to do.

She'd tried bringing her laptop, once or twice, but there was little she could do without access to the internet at large and the damned report on the vampire squid had been written and edited until Helen was certain the next time she opened it all the text would have gone red. Research was the most viable option for her time here but even that was lackluster; what was the point when she couldn't have it published, even in Abnormal circles? At least Will's profession hadn't changed at all on the island and, to hear him tell it, actually flourished.

It must have been that thought that presented her with the next offering from the shelf, a book that Helen tossed into a chair with disgust.

"He's Just Not That Into You. I'm well aware, bookshelf. We already had that painful conversation. Pray we can move on now?"

This was her life, talking to an inanimate object. She tried again, closing her eyes and wishing for one of the dozens of novels she'd just never had time to read back home. Audrey Niffenegger, Sue Monk Kidd, Chuck Palahniuk...all right, so one of those was not like the other. She rather liked Palahniuk on a rare basis.

"Knight in Shining Armor? The Devil in Winter? Dear God. I could have sex if I chose to, bookshelf. I don't think you're on the right track at all."
