The voice on the jukebox sounds so much like him that Quinn can't leave the room. She's sure it's a sign of her pregnancy getting to her head somehow, sure that this must be some hormonal thing. After all, the cramps have been getting worse today, and she's done so much walking in an attempt to get this show on the road that her feet are ( Read more... )

She's been resting against the couch, her feet and bottom on the floor, her back to its upholstered side, but now Cassie slips up and away. "Oh," she says, "Oh wow," and threads her fingers through Quinn's. "I didn't know it would be so wet."

"It's going to get a lot wetter," Quinn says unhappily, "when my insides turn inside out." A cramp, or, she supposes, a contraction, races through her, and she groans. "Oh my god, I'm going to die, aren't I? There's no drugs here, they can't give me anything for the pain."

"I think so," Quinn gasps. "You aren't going to leave me, right? You're going to stay while this happens? Please, I just-- need somebody."

"You're not to worry about that," says Cassie, and it frightens her a bit to see proud, fierce Quinn distraught over a puddle, but she knows that's only the fear talking. "Come now, squeeze my hand," she says, and keeps them moving steadily towards the door.

Doing just that, Quinn lets herself be guided towards the door and out into the hallway. "I'm worried about everything," she says. "Cassie, I've done so many awful things for this baby. I'm going to be a terrible mother."

"You couldn't have done," says Cassie, stroking her hair as they shuffle along. She wants to balk at the distant clinic door, sick to death at the sight of it, but she won't. "You're only frightened. What could be so terrible?"
