Hawkeye had first stumbled across the rec centre when searching for shelter from the monsoon, and since then had added it to his list of regular haunts. Its primary attraction was the television and the programmes it showed, which without exception were bright, gaudy, and starred people wearing some of the most ridiculous clothing Hawkeye had ever seen.
He'd be hard pressed to pick a favourite show. The Dukes of Hazzard had that girl with the tiny shorts, but Charlie's Angels had three girls who sometimes wore skirts with amazingly high hemlines. There weren't any skimpily-clad women in Fawlty Towers, but it did make Hawkeye laugh until his sides hurt, while the Muppet Show was always guaranteed to put him in a good mood.
This time round, he'd just finished watching another episode of that show about the two British guys who punched things and flirted with each other a lot - The Professionals, if he recalled correctly - and had got up and was almost out of the door when he heard something that stopped him in his tracks. It was that damn song again, the one that the jukebox played him every time he entered the rec room. Hawkeye turned back, and saw the word 'M*A*S*H' displayed in big yellow letters across the screen.
Now it all made sense. The jukebox always played him the song because it was the theme tune to a TV show about a MASH unit. The lyrics about suicide were a bit unsettling, but maybe it was just that bit which was Hawkeye's paranoia manifesting itself. Fascinated, he reclaimed his spot on the sofa, watching with a combination of excitement and uncertainty as the opening titles showed ambulances and choppers pouring into the camp, doctors and nurses running to get the wounded. It was some kind of historical drama, he supposed - well, a show about an army hospital was hardly going to be a comedy, was it?
One of the choppers landed, and several people ran up to it. The camera zoomed in for a close-up - and there was Hawkeye's face on the screen. He blinked, and it was gone, but the strangeness remained, because now it was showing Trapper - how long had it been since he'd seen Trapper? - attending to a stretcher.
Hawkeye was rarely lost for words, but this had done the job. He watched with his jaw hanging agape as the titles ended and Margaret came on screen, clad in a silk bathrobe and apparently making herself ready to greet a special visitor. He'd always believed he'd lived such a strange life that nothing that happened on the island could surprise him. It appeared that he'd underestimated the island.
[Yeah, he's just been canon punctured. Feel free to come in at any time during or after the episode. The particular ep he's watching is 1x17, 'Sometimes You Hear The Bullet', so be prepared for spoilers for that in particular and the show in general. All tags welcome, though especially from pups already aware of his canon.]
