The end of the rain ended my enforced boredom. No longer trapped in my hut, in the kitchen, or in the rec center where I could watch television, I felt the need to get out and do things. I'd left William in the children's center for the day and did what any intelligent person would do. I strapped on my rollerskates.
The boardwalks were hardly even but rollerskating was faster and more fulfilling than running and I needed to do something to stay fit. As if carrying a small child around wasn't enough. No, I needed to feel the wind in my hair as I sped down the paths, around corners, from New Atlantis to the beach and back. It was invigorating and I'd hardly ever seen the jungle look more beautiful. It was humid as could be but I could overlook that. Sort of. Except when it was making my ponytails simultaneously frizz out and cling to my sweaty skin.
But on I went, singing a snippet of a song I'd heard on the jukebox. It helped me set a good speed as I sailed along, clickety clack, clickety clack over the boards.
"Look out!" I called. "On your right!"
Or was it left? I decided it was left when I put my toe down and rattled to a stop.
