Anne did sometimes feel the strain of taking on so many things when there were a limited number of hours in the day, but it was no more than she would have taken on back home, and here on the island, though she wouldn't have thought so once, she had many more people willing and able to give a helping hand. Not that she thought she would be wanting for help and companionship in Avonlea, but people there were quite busy as well, and more limited in number than here on the island. So Anne did not regret a single thing that occupied time in her life.
Particularly not when she found herself in a position to handle more than one task at a time.
"You're not old enough to have cultivated a particular interest," she said to Matthew who was enthusiastically tugging a carrot out of the ground, "but there were a great many American authors who were quite up to the task of going toe to toe with the British greats." Matthew gave a little shout of accomplishment, and Anne just smiled. "Astonishing, I know!"
Matthew walked over, deposited the carrot in her lap, and went back for another one. So long as Anne needed an outlet for Matthew's energy, having him assist her in the garden seemed a welcome use of it. Particularly now that he'd found a way to be useful. At least, for as long as his attention span lasted.
"Oh, you haven't any idea how delighted I am to finally have a literature class to teach," she said. "Not, of course, that I've ever been the slightest bit disappointed in the classes I have already established, for learning to read and write and do arithmetic are the foundations of any good education, but oh, you know how much I adore a good story. You'll have a whole new collection of bedtime stories by the time I'm through.
Matthew grunted as he tugged another large carrot out of the ground, falling back onto his bottom once he had it in hand and looking very pleased with himself.
Well, perhaps she would foster a love of literature another day.
