"Forgiven," Maladicta said from behind his shoulder, standing still while someone else scooted past Geoffrey, and her, before holding Olivia up with two hands, "if you take this."

Olivia looked up at Geoffrey with clear blue eyes, then burbled quietly at him with a fairly impressive degree of solemnity, however amicable.

"But I can't eat that," says Geoffrey, even as he obediently takes the child into his own hands and stares at her dubiously. "At least, not without a lot of public outcry, and frankly I doubt she'd taste good enough to be worth it."

Olivia stared back at Geoffrey before, after a long moment, squealing softly and wriggling a little. Maladicta was attached to the coffee machine and distracted.

"I don't know, she smells all right," Maladicta said, "for a baby."

"Babies don't generally have an appetizing smell, I find," says Geoffrey, giving her an experimental sniff. "Not even when dipped in sauce. Especially not when dipped in sauce."

"If I said a baby had an appetizing smell I'd be locked up on principle," Maladicta murmured, sighing a little over her poured cup and moving to sit without so much as gesturing to take the baby back from Geoffrey. Olivia didn't seem to mind and continued to make some vaguely pleased noises up at him. She was smiling. By Maladicta's estimate, this meant things were going well.

"It's one of the great mysteries of life here on the island that nobody ever locks me up," says Geoffrey, making faces at the child as he sits down. "They did it more often than you'd think, back home. Or maybe not more often than you'd think. Hard to say."

"Would you like me to?" Maladicta asked, sitting as well and taking a sip from her mug.

"For old time's sake? Set the balance of the universe right."

"If the urge ever strikes you," says Geoffrey, though it's possible that's a very dangerous thing to say to someone like Maladicta. "I hear you're treated pretty well, all things considered. Good food. Warm bed."
