The things you never realize that you miss hurt the most. Because when you realize just what you've been living without, you feel the pain of it and all that time spent away crashing down on your heart at once ( Read more... )

Jean doesn't want to interupt. It might be in the middle of the rec room, speakers giving away what is going on the screen, but one look tells her that the woman watching the screen is the woman that is on the screen.

Her attempts to stay away come to much of nothing as she fails to notice a chair that is pulled away from one of the tables until her shin hits it. Letting out a sharp gasp of pain, she stumbles back cursing the clumsiness that has seized her.

"Sorry!" she says as way of apology, waving a hand at the woman. "Accidents happen, all of that. Don't let me interrupt."

There was a weak sniffle, but when Uhura turned to look at the source of the voice, the greatest part of the sorrow had left her expression. It wouldn't do to mourn too long when life was going on around her.

"Oh, don't be silly. No need to apologize," she assured her, rising from her seat. "Are you alright? Do you need a hand?"

Rubbing her elbow Jean shakes her head, offering up something of a rueful smile. She isn't certain which she regrets more at the moment: the fact that she caused an interruption or that she managed to get hurt in the process.

"Oh no, I'm fine. Thank you for asking. Sometimes I just get clumsy, not often but enough to take me by surprise."

"If it didn't take you by surprise, you wouldn't be clumsy anymore. Or you'd just be a masochist," Uhura deduced in a light, amused tone. "But you don't look like the latter to me."

"I might be many things, but masochist has never been one of them," Jean bobs her head slightly, laughing at the very idea of the label being applied to her. taking a step away from the offending furniture and towards the sofa, she shrugs. "It's simple science, but spaciel awareness has a way of definitely catching up with you."

She laughed softly at that, not unkindly but still amused. "I know only two, maybe three people who would bring running into a chair down to science. Are you a scientist?"

"Something like that. More of a doctor than anything else these days, but this isn't the sort of medicine that I am used to."

Not by a longshot. Fewer mutations and weird ailments that came as a result of their lifestyle. Jean doesn't know whether she should miss it or be glad that things are different.

"Are those other people scientists too? It's a unique skillset to look for the science."

Uhura nodded, smiling fondly. "One's a little bit of a genius, and the other is a genius by human standards. His mind works in the purely scientific. Scotty or Sulu might have said the same, but Sulu's too graceful to trip honestly and Scotty would have a colorful phrase instead."

"I know several people who would toss in a colourful phrase no matter the audience. They'd probably shout it if children were around."

The list of names that springs to mind is longer than she'll ever admit, but she keeps that to herself. "I wouldn't say that I only go to the scientific. I know better than to blame it all on that."

"Oh no, not like that," she clarified, a look of apology flashing across her face. "Scottish colorful phrase. Scotty's a gentleman, despite being covered in engine grease half the time." Or at least her Scotty had been, and she had seen nothing from this version to change her tune.

"And you're already smarter than most scientists I know," she said, grinning. "I'm Uhura. What's your name?"

"Is he here? Unless there are multiple men who fit that description, which could definitely be the case," Jean says with an added laugh. That was another list. People had a way of fulfilling more than one description and still being very unique.

"Jean. It's nice to meet you Uhura."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Jean. And yes, he is," Uhura confirmed with a warm smile and nod, the look meant for more the mention of Scotty than for Jean. "And still getting up to his elbows in engines somehow, even here."
