With the new school term about to begin, River needed to get her neglected dance studio in shape for upcoming classes. Though the only thing she was planning to teach herself was the class of very small children that she'd had such fun with before, but that wasn't part of the official island school and she set her own schedule, which meant she ( Read more... )

"Hi," said Emmy, standing in the doorway and rocking back and forth on her feet as she watched them. It was just too hard to resist following the music to the studio, even though she tried to stay put. "Are we dancing now?"

"We're always dancing." She shifted Zoe a bit to free her hand and motioned for Emmy to come in. "And you're always welcome to join us, if you want to. No one should have to wait for a class to dance."

Now that she was invited--though she didn't always wait for such niceties--Emmy practically skipped into the room and over to River's side, putting her arms in the air over her head.

"I don't know the steps!"

"That's okay. We're making up our own steps anyway." Zoe squealed and flung her hands in the air with such enthusiasm that River was glad for her own quick reflexes that kept her from losing her grip on her. "It's more exciting this way."

"Okay," said Emmy and she was trying, really trying, to look like the ballet dancers she saw in books, but she didn't think she had it right. Still, with her hands still over her head she turned in a clumsy circle with a smile on her face.

River was of the opinion that effort counted for a lot in beginning dancers. Grace and precision could come later, if one was inclined, but if they didn't start out having fun, what was the point?

"That's very good," she said, turning herself around with somewhat more finesse, her movements significantly hampered by her armful of squirmy baby.

"An' the other way, too!" said Emmy, even more enthusiastic now that she had what she perceived as approval. And with hands still up, she turned around in the opposite direction. Twice. Before losing her balance a little.

Zoe, at least, seemed impressed. The baby clapped, and River kind of wished she had a flower to toss at Emmy, just to make the ballerina game more complete. "Brava!" she cheered. "You're about ready for the stage."

"Yay!" said Emmy, jumping up and down a little bit. She knew it wasn't in the dancer way, because dancers jumped really prettily, but that was okay because she was already done. "Does the baby dance?"

Zoe bounced slightly, as though answering the question for herself.

"Not exactly. She hasn't even learned to stand up on her own yet. But sher might want to, someday."

"Dil's little too," said Emmy. He didn't really do anything interesting yet, much less stand up and play with her. "But maybe he'll want to dance too when he's bigger?"

"Maybe. And we'll have to teach him how. It'll be fun." River spun about once, making Zoe give a happy little squeal, and loved the idea of passing on such knowledge to a whole generation of island children.
