We all have our origin stories. Ask most superheroes around the block, and they'll tell you they trained long and hard to get where they are now. Maybe they had their very own Mr. Miyagi or maybe they just had the time and resources to dedicate themselves to a life of having their kiester handed to them every other night of the week ( Read more... )

"Kate! Wait up!" Alice calls, half-running half-skipping as she diverts in her temporarily chosen path to fall into step with her friend. She casts a quick look in the direction that she had come from, her smiling face falling into one of mild confusion at the sight of the guy who has clearly seen better days.

"Someone got into something he wasn't supposed to," she comments with a shake of her head. "It's like playing with matches, some people never learn."

"Who, Peter?" I ask, twisting to glance back over my shoulder before turning my attention to the path in front of us. I ignore the twinge of pain that flares up in my neck from the gesture -- maybe I'll ask Nate for a massage later. I could use one.

"I don't know, I think I could probably qualify for the never learns award today."

"That's his name? Then yeah, him."

Alice used to be very good at getting into things she wasn't meant to. She also used to be very good at keeping herself unbroken when that happened.

Arching an eyebrow she turns her full attention on her friend. "Would you? For what exactly or is it nothing new?"

"I just got my butt kicked by an X-Men reject," I say, annoyed at myself more so than at Alice. I mean, it's not like she did anything wrong. "I did that thing where I thought I was awesome and it ended up blowing up in my face again."

At least this time I didn't lose my bow, but I should've listened when he told me he used to be a ninja.

"Eew," Alice stretches the word out and makes a face to illustrate her sympathy. She is still a bit fuzzy on the exactly social hierarchy of super heroes where Kate came from, but a reject from anything sounds terrible.

"That always sucks, but you can always get your just revenge later? Maybe?"

"I signed up for that weaponry class," I say with a shrug, then push a hand back through my hair. "Maybe I need to brush up on my mad skills." I fall silent for all of a second, then pull a face. "Well, not maybe, since that just happened, but... Ugh."

"So you're going to take him down with a battle stave that you cobbled together for homework?"

It makes sense. Especially given that people who were experts at making weapons weren't exactly a dime a dozen around here. Grinning, she laughs lightly at the notion of Kate going samuri on someone. "You could catch up off guard? Sneak attacks work really well."

"I'm not going to punch the guy without fair warning, Alice," I say with a roll of my eyes. It was one thing to break into Avengers HQ to get my bow back, but I draw the line at randomly hitting someone whose only crime is beating me once in a sparring match. "I'll just have to be better next time."

"Fine then."

Alice had not said that Kate had to punch him. Maybe just take his knees out and push him over. That seems like a reasonable way to win. Playing fair was for amateurs.

"Then you will."

"Then I will," I say with a decisive nod, adjusting the straps of my bag on my shoulders. "Revenge is a dish best served cold anyway, right?"

"Yeah, I guess." Frowning for the briefest of moments, she shakes her head her brilliant smile returning. "I never really got that saying. Unless revenge is ice cream, why would you want it to be cold?"

"I think it's just supposed to mean, like, you shouldn't have it right away," I say, not really caring if her question was rhetorical. "It's more satisfying if the person doesn't remember they did you wrong in the first place. So it's cold, not hot. Like leftover pizza or something."

"Oh. That makes much more sense than like serving revenge over ice. That just seems a bit gross."

Revenge had never really been something that Alice had tried at. She had been the subject of it, had fought back but it usually ended up worthless. A product of knowing what was coming. "Not the leftover pizza part. I like that."

The best thing about the Winchester is that they have pizza -- not New York pizza, mind you, but it's still about the closest thing to home we have here in terms of food without the benefit of island magic. Suffice it to say, I visit a lot.

"That's because leftover pizza is awesome."

"It really is, isn't it?" Her enthusiasm about something so trivial is enough to get Alice mildly bouncing. She loves that even months later she can still find silly little things to adore. It's wonderful.

"How much leftover pizza have you even had?" I ask with a laugh, looking at her, confused. "I thought you only ate, like, animals when you were all sparkly."
