Xander was in between jobs at the moment. He'd just returned his tools to the hut and had a shower up at the Compound after a day on the building crew. Now, he was walking down the beach, taking the long route to The Catscratch to help Helen set up for the night. He was still in the middle of the avoiding people stage of depression, still feeling lonely after Spike's disappearance.

He really didn't know what was it that made him look up, but he stopped in his tracks when he did. Sure, he knew there had been a clone on the island, Booth or something who Spike had always complained about when they'd had patrols together for the IPD. At first, that's who Xander hoped it was but as seconds went by and he stared at that hair...this was no Booth.

It was Deadboy.

Xander groaned. "This is SO not fair..."

"Xander. Good to see you, too." Angel replied, pointedly ignoring the groan, his face unreadable. Buffy's best friend would probably never like him, although Angel's feelings towards Xander were slightly less antagonistic - actually, that was probably because he had more important things to worry about, relatively.

The Sunnydale days were over. Too bad neither of them could remember that.

Never like Deadboy was an understatement, especially right now when ex-vamps were not his favorite people in the world. And Xander really wasn't in the mood to be polite.

"So. You just get here?" He asked bluntly.

"Try to contain your excitement." his dry tone would normally be used to mask slight amusement, if Angel wasn't sure that Xander knew better. As it was, he'd already had his daily dose of awkward, and wasn't looking to heap more on that.

"After three years of people coming and going, it's hard to really care anymore." Xander retorted, just barely managing to keep the bitterness out of his voice. "So, when are you from back home?" Might as well get that bit out of the way.

"2000." their rapid-fire exchange does nothing to hide the fact that there's something off about Xander. Normally, he would have found ten ways to antagonize Angel to his (figurative) death by now. Apathy and Xander just didn't mix, but anyone could become jaded when pushed to it.

Angel doesn't ask. It's not that he doesn't care, but pride's on the table here and that has to be minded.

It had been a rough few months. Xander thought he was allowed to be jaded. While he did take pleasure in annoying Deadboy...he just wasn't in the mood. But...he did appreciate that Angel didn't mention it. He'd never admit that out loud, but he was.

"You're only from a year after me then. Good, I hate the eye conversation and why I have two of them." He paused, then asked, "Has Buffy seen you yet?"

"She has." so others had come to the island from the future. It wasn't just Buffy. And somewhere in the near future, Xander had apparently lost an eye. Angel may or may not have winced just the slightest, the expression visible on his face if one looked particularly closely.

"So you don't remember Thanksgiving. What's the last thing you do remember?"

Xander couldn't help a sigh. "Good. That's another conversation I didn't want to have. Doing it wit..." He paused, about the mention when he'd had to tell Spike about Buffy returning to the island and he had to stop his face from falling. He really needed to get over this already, especially with Deadboy around. And this conveniently had him miss any of sign of the sympathetic wince. "Well anyway, you'd probably take all this better from her."

Then he paused to think through things he'd been told. "Thanksgiving. Was that when my pe...I got sick? Anya was here a few years ago and she liked bringing that one up. No, I don't remember that. Last thing I remember was coming home from my road trip that wasn't. If what I was told is right, you had just left for LA?" It was oddly comforting to know that Angel was from around the same time as him. He didn't have to worry about Angel knowing things about him that he didn't because really...it was getting old from everyone else and those were people he actually liked.

"Yeah." Angel's quick to cut off the second part of Xander's words, even though he doesn't remark on the first. He really could do without hearing about Xander's...well. But luckily enough for him, the interjection wasn't really necessary.

Neither is this sharing of information. They've never been on good terms, and never thought they would ever be, but perhaps they called this place 'the blank slate' for a reason.

"I've been in LA a while. Like you said, one year."

Even if Angel felt this was unnecessary, Xander would have forced it at some point so he was glad to get it out of the way now. To many things had happened and Xander had lived on the island far too long to let it go.

But really now that all the necessary information was out of the way, Xander didn't know what to say. "So uh...how was it?" he said for lack of anything else.

Angel was naturally awkward. That part could not be debated, for all of his black clothing and mystery. But throw him into an equally stilted conversation and he's practically dead in the water. He doesn't do small talk, as a general rule - and his attempt at it is almost painful.

But he's attempting. Making connections. Not letting himself get cut off from the world, like Doyle had said - even if it was more difficult than just sitting in the dark by himself.

Since when was he one to ever do things the easy way, anyways?

"Alright. Lot of vampires, demons...people that need saving. An evil law firm or two. You know."

"Evil law firm? That's....horribly twisted and yet not such a big surprise." Xander replied, perhaps a little impressed. Then he sighed and rolled his eyes. "Right, this is painful for both of us. I gotta be at the Club to help Helen. I'll leave you to find a mirror.
