This was a fucking BANNER day. No, not banner of the 'you wouldn't like me when I'm angry' variety, but BANNER because Brodie had found a copy of fucking Amazing Fantasy Number 15. That shit was RARE. The RAREST of the RARE. It wasn't Action Comics Number One, but when it came to the shitty bookshelf, he was usually lucky to even get a comic without any dings in the pages, so Brodie wasn't about to complain.
Shit, it had been a decent couple of MONTHS, actually. Between getting a hand that didn't look like it was going to cheat you out of getting cheap stuffed animals out of a machine and being spared that day of silence shit, Brodie was nearly on cloud NINE.
Good mood firmly in place, Brodie had put the comic with the rare ones in his room and gone out for one of his normal walks on the island. He wasn't sure who he was going to go shoot the shit with, but he usually ended up running into someone anyway.
What Brodie hadn't planned that day was running into someTHING instead of someONE.
Headed across the beach without a care in the world-- fuck, but he was as happy as Professor X in a room full of ramps-- Brodie didn't notice when he ran into something half buried in the sand. He fell backwards, Dixie cup of pineapple juice spilling onto the sand as he clutched at his throbbing shin from where it had hit whatever the fuck. When he looked up to yell at whoever had left their shit lying around, his eyes went wide. Right there on the island, right there in the sand was one of the signs from the Eden Prairie Mall. HIS Mall. The fucking CORNERSTONE of Jersey commerce. FUCKING BESMIRCHED.
Sure, it wasn't the big sign near the turn-in from the main street, but that shit didn't matter. The Mall sign belonged AT THE FUCKING MALL, not in the sand on Shit Pit island where people could fucking hit their shins on it and it couldn't greet people as they walked into the glass doors that led to the MECCA OF MERCHANDISE.
Mouth gaped open in shock, Brodie just stared. So much for things going his way.
