Throwing a party was a lot more work than Logan had anticipated, and he found himself grateful for a change that Jack had so many friends. Decorating wasn't so bad, and it went by faster with the help of Prior and Maureen, but food... Well, anyone who had ever tasted Logan's attempts at anything other than pancakes or bacon would be glad to know ( Read more... )

It was very easy to lose track of time on the island, and this morning had been like any other. When Harry remembered what date it was he got a funny feeling that was important, but didn't remember why until he was in the middle of shaving. His hand had slipped and taken a tiny nick out of his jaw.

Some time later, he'd heard the sounds of enthuastic celebration and for a brief optimistic moment wondered if it were for him - when he actually came round and saw it, he realised it was somebody else's anniversary instead. And what was more, it was something to do with that guy he'd once nearly got into a fight with because he'd started going on about sleeping with men, and also the guy who'd broken it up. Harry's excitement waned somewhat.

But in retrospect, that was a really dumb thing to have got into an argument about, and in a community this small it was stupid to avoid people because of one bad conversation. Harry didn't hold grudges, and he thought today was particularly apt for a party. So he wandered up and started fixing himself a drink. Presumably no-one would mind.

Logan was getting ready to leave the party, and he accidentally pumped into a familiar looking man as he reached to grab one more beer for the road.

"Shit, sorry," he muttered. "You okay?" he asked, knowing he hadn't nudged the guy hard but attempting to be polite.

Some of his drink spilled, but Harry was far too drunk to care about that. He turned, waiting for the scenery to stop moving so he could work out who he was being addressed by.

"You're Logan," he said, peering up at him. "The guy with the dog, and the husband."

"And a surfboard, a wetsuit, a laptop and many other things. I can give you a list of things I have if you want," Logan replied, the obnoxious response slipping out before he could curb his attitude.

He paused a beat and tried for something a little less rude.

"Sorry, I can't seem to remember your name," he admitted, awkwardly offering the man his hand.

"Harry," Harry said, giving Logan's hand a firm shake. "I think we've met. Once." He waved his hand vaguely, indicating that it wasn't something to bother trying too hard to dredge from the memory. "Never mind. This is a good party you've got here. I can't remember the last time I ate so many cocktail weenies."

"Oh, yeah, I didn't cook those. I had a lot of help with the food. Like, so much held that I didn't even go into a kitchen," Logan assured him. "It's good though. Guess I'm lucky there are so many people who like Jack. If I'd done this by myself, we'd all be eating pancakes and drinking mango juice."

"That doesn't sound so bad to me," Harry shrugged. "I can't cook worth a damn. If I had to cater a party all by myself, everybody'd be eating sandwiches and canned fruit - but this is really impressive!"

He looked around, but quickly gave up on your search. "Hey, where's your dog? I liked that dog."

"Linus? Uh, he should be around somewhere," Logan replied, looking around. "Or he could be sleeping, though that's unlikely since there's food around."

As a general rule, Jack and Logan rarely ate without a dog begging for food.

"Oh, yeah, there he is, nosing round behind the tables," Harry said, finally catching sight of him. "Damn, I envy dogs. They never seem to have anything to worry about - just eat and sleep and goof around, and everybody's always telling them how good they are."

He whistled, trying to catch the dog's attention. It didn't seem to work. "Did he come with you, or did you find him on the island?"

"He was a gift from the island one year," Logan replied. "He turned up as a puppy with my name on his collar about two years ago."

Turning his head, Logan whistled and Linus instantly rushed over. He yipped happily, standing on his back paws for a moment as he bomced around, and then sat down. He was wagging his tail so hard that his whole body seemed to move with it, and his tongue hung out slightly as he panted.

Picking up a bit of finger food, Logan tossed it in the air, smiling as Linus caught it and begged for a little more.

Logan gave him another piece, but hushed him after that. Who knew how much the dog had eaten already.
