The pie maker was no stranger to children; he'd been one himself, of course (though he'd grown up at an awfully young age), saw them every day (usually leaving sticky handprints on table tops) and had begun to consider that perhaps one day he might have a little pie maker of his own ( Read more... )

Spike is a fan of the kitchen, even if it does mean he runs up against his doppelganger more than he'd like.

His doppelganger and a baby, apparently, today.

"...you have a baby?"

"I have a baby," Ned replied before Spike was barely done, shifting the emphasis to the proper word. "I'm holding her. For someone."

That's for the best. Spike isn't ready to be a father, even if only by facial proxy.

"She's cute," Spike observes, and then abruptly makes the goofiest face he can pull.

Spike, it must be said, has a face that lends itself to goofiness.

Madeline seemed to give Ned's arm a little kick, though he couldn't tell if it was amusement, or just a twitch. He was leaning toward the twitch.

"She's quiet," he said, and as far as Ned was concerned, that was the most important part.

The kitchen was a place that the girl named Chuck frequently wandered in and out of, whether it was her day to cook or not. Having puttered around the bees for a little while, she had returned to the kitchen with a book and an intention to get something to drink.

"Oh," she said, half-startled by the sight of Ned with a baby. She would be lying if she said that such a scene did not cause her heart to flutter just a tiny bit, for it did. Smiling widely she changed directions towards where they sat. "Hi there."

"Hi," Ned replied, eyes as wide as baby Madeline's as he watched Chuck walk closer.

"I'm holding a baby," he explained, though it was quite plain to see. The question Ned was asking himself was how on earth his day had led up to this moment.

"I see that. Whose baby is it?"

Chuck had a notion of who it might be, but it was better to confirm these things before going along with that line of thought. After all there were only so many people who would give Ned a baby even if only for a little while.

"The Woodcombs," replied Ned, looking back down at Madeline when she made a noise and waved a little arm about before getting a good hold on one of the strings on his sweatshirt. She didn't seem distressed, though Ned wasn't sure she had more than one or two facial expressions.

"Devon went to use the bathroom. Do you think she's okay? I can't tell. I think all she can do is stare and attempt to eat my clothing."
